  4. Dunno about quills, but my early school memories are of scratchy pens and inkwells set into the desks. When were biros invented and when did they become cheap enough for common usage? I know they were banned for all my schooling
  5. Thanks, the descriptions in my Spink (2007) are very confusing for EdIII, "with French title" confused me, I assume that's just for the groats? Is there an online reference for EdIII? The UKDFD pages are excellent for the long cross and early eddies
  6. Help on this one please, I think this is Edward III, tall crown, annulet stops + EDWARDVS ° REX ° ANGLI / CIVITAS LONDON Nearest I can find is Spink 1630 for York - a mule?? David

  11. I thought our young team, who carried no great expectations, played very well Everything still to play for
  12. Another addition to my growing collection of medieval pennies (deniers, pfennigs etc) bucket.com/user/microtome/media/1088-1120BearnLesCentullesDenier.jpg.html'> France 1088-1300 Bearn Les Centulles Denier, a common type, but still a very nice little coin for $30 Obv CENTVLLO COM, cross with two pellets Rev ONOR FORCAS around PAX (no idea who Forcas is)
  13. I'm having problems with a seller in Poland, bought the coins and paid same day with PayPal as advertised in the listing. Seller refuses Paypal but has not refunded, and demands I send him bank transfer at my expense I rang ebay, they just said I need to wait a month before I can raise a case against him. They were nice coins, suspect the selling price was not as much as he hoped for
  14. 1818 for me too
  15. That makes me feel very ancient! Just think - the bun penny 1860-1894 34yrs, the decimal 2p 1971-2014 43 yrs. Sobering thought, even if you rule out all the RM proofs & commemorative crap, there's a significant number of different decimal coins for today's new collectors to go for, I doubt few folk under 50 remember Lsd
  16. Poland's reply to UKIP? Apparently it celebrates 25 years of freedom
  17. Quite! unfortunately we as a species don't learn from history. I was in Kosovo in late 2001, and I have chilling memories of the still fresh mass graves on the hillsides
  18. and this one The Obverse has the mint letter G for Poitiers, plus the O after POL for the mintmaster Ollivier. The reverse has the traditional secret mark for Poitiers the point under letter 8
  19. 1587 with Obv legend starting at 12 O'clock and with a point under letter 16 ie under the E of ET would indicate Dijon mint CGKL 44 Early French coins use "secret marks" to indicate mint and were gradually replaced by letter designations, although the secret mintmarks were officially replaced by letter designations in 1540 This double tournois has both the archaic mark of a point below the 5th letter of the obverse legend (the I of HENRI) and the more modern T both indicating the Nantes mint. The point beneath the 1st 8 of the date on the reverse is thought to be the mark of the engraver Mg Come Menard David
  20. 1460–1473 Lusignan Kingdom of Cyprus - James II (Jacques le Bâtard) copper Sixain Obv: Rampant lion to left - +IACOBUS D GRAIAX / Rev: Jerusalem cross - (+IERUSALEM CIPRI)?
  21. Ones I have and would recommend, worth checking earlier secondhand copies on Ebay - prices may be outdated but relative rarity still valid France Le Franc 10 - (2014) 1795 to 2001 -excellent better than Gadoury in my opinion - prices in Euros, most varieties covered, copious notes Repetoire General des Monniaes de Louis XIII a Louis XVI - Droulers (2012) 1610-1793 - prices in Euros, most varieties covered, copious notes Le Mercure des Monnaies Francaises - la Revolution Droulers (1996) 1791-1794 prices in French francs. but still the best detailed reference for this period all the above in French only Greece Hellas Coins Karamitsos (2007) good coverage of all pre Euro issues from 1825 - text in Greek & English. prices in Euros Spain My Spanish Catalogue is ancient - text in Spanish & prices in Pesetas Catalogo General de la Mondea Espanola Edifil (1981) Spain & colonies 1700-1868 - rather odd layout but good coverage Italy Catalogo Nazionale delle Monete Italiane dal '700 all 'Euro Gigante (2013) Italy & Colonies plus Italian States 1732 up to the Euro - text in Italian prices in Euros I'm still looking for a decent German Catalogue I also have catalogues for the Netherlands, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, & Scandanavia - plus some more specialized French books. Most national catalogues cost no more than the first decent coin you will buy for that country - always a worthwhile investment David
