  1. Relax. Forgeries of 1905 coins have been occurring for donkeys yonks. Don't confuse them with the Chinese factories, well not all of them .
  2. Actually, if our government called in the banks' debt, it would be meltdown.
  3. Welcome to the forums Crack (Your links don't work for me, by the way). I would regard bullion as totally separate from numismatics. If you want to go down that route, fine, but this is a good place to find out about coins. You're right to want to learn first, as plunging in with little knowledge is not a good idea! As for books, there are many out there, but a good place to start is two of the above titles - "Collectors Coins GB" (3rd from the left) and "Grading British Coins" (on the left). You also should look around what you want to collect, the choice is enormouys and there's no need to specialise right away. Steer clear of buying on eBay until you know much more about the subject. Find yourself a good dealer, or attend one of the regular fairs the biggest being in London, Birmingham, and York. Have a good look at these forums, as there are many pictures and discussions that will help you learn about coins. Once you've decided what you'd like to start collecting, ask here and you will get lots of advice! The best advice for beginners is this : it's better to buy a small number of good quality items, than a vast number of low quality. Or to put it another way - buy the best you can afford.
  4. It may be that if you empty your cache, it will no longer show up to you? Just emptied the cache (Google Chrome), and now the pic doesn't show in either place!!! Have now uploaded new images, it was easier! Now I see ya!
  5. I wasn't talking about this country's politics, or what the Labour Party stands for, or even the 'capitalist system'. I'm talking about the international fantasy that is the banking system, based on nothing that's real, nothing that's produced by real people, just a conspiracy to dream up new ways to make money (mostly on paper) without let or hindrance, or answerable to a single bloody politician anywhere. OTM. Your money. My money. I have to say, I pretty much agree with both of you. And no, that's not a contradiction. Add in my extreme dislike of our slide towards a Big Brother state and that about covers everything! P.s. careful with the 'OTM' reference though Peckris. Remember, "The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money" Yeah, maybe. But OTM was an acronym dreamed up on the Stock Exchange trading floor, not over beer and sandwiches.
  6. Polished to buggery and a private listing (AND WE ALL KNOW HOW THEY GET SHILLED UPON) to boot! Maximus Scrotumus Cranius will undoubtedly outbid I LIKUS THE SHINUS in the final seconds. Shame about the polishing - those are two high grade lovelies.. or would have been.
  7. What's a 1953 Jubilee Crown? I thought that was a Coronation crown?

  9. Hear bloody hear. And all that nonsense about paying bonuses "to attract the best talent" - oh suuuuuuuuuure, the kind of talent that sees an investment instrument rated AAA that's actually backed up by sub-prime mortgages, and hedges it to their own bank to offset the losses when the mortgage market goes belly up, then creams off all the profit from that safe gamble, and laughs all the way to the ... well, er, bank. "OTM". "Other People's Money". That's all they care about the likes of you and me.
  10. It may be that if you empty your cache, it will no longer show up to you?
  11. azda, i sincerely hope that you and peckris both understand that my posts were meant in good faith and also meant to differentiate between the bad that occurs on ebay, those you have highlighted as shill bidders, those who clearly sell the utmost of polished crap, designed to mislead, and the genuine dealer, whom may have had a difference in grading to personal levels. we may all disagree on grade of a particular coin at times with bona fida dealers, that happens, we have different ideas and ideals, different knowledge of a specific coin/dies....etc etc, but it sure must be difficult to be all embracing. azda....how many times have you come on here to ask for die pairings/references for a particular penny.....loads azda....how many times have you asked for a grading on a particular coin...................................loads does that make you or any other here better than CC or Rendell........maybe yes, maybe no. but yes it does make YOU and Peckris and CC and Rendell and all the others here far and away better than the those shill bidders, crap sellers on ebay...........and that was the whole point of my original post....... im gonna leave this forum now................theres clearly no place for a prick like me here. ski I wouldn't worry, ski. There will always be disagreements with people even in the most (normally) harmonious of settings. Doesn't mean they're by default right, and you're wrong. Sometimes they will be and sometimes you will be. Sometimes you will both be half right and half wrong. Whichever, it's not worth putting yourself down and leaving for, as it will all be forgotten in a few days anyway. If you have something to say, say it, and if it happens to upset someone, then tough do dahs. It's life, it's the way it is. You should see many of the comments made and insults exchanged on some forums. Makes the worst of what you see on here look like a Sunday School outing. That's the trouble with fora, a timid gutless coward all of a sudden grows a pair the size of watermelons as he sits at his computer 2000 miles away from the poor recipient of the hurtful dirge. As Mike said Ski, divn't worry aboot it marra. I've got skin thicker than a Rhinos arse so you or anybody else might get me revved up for a minute or two but after that I start to worry about more important things like "can Newcastle stuff the Toffees the day?" Not on this occasion, John. I was hoping they would, too. Pleased for Man City ~ was really Boys Own Annual stuff getting those 2 goals in injury time. On a sour note, I note that psycho Barton got sent off again, and hopefully will face a lengthy ban. Sorry to go off topic, folks The Mighty Mags came "unstuck" against the Toffees Didn't matter in the end with Arsenal and Arry's boys winning. Still a great season for us though. I think City deserved it this year and congrats to them. Barton.... "taxi to Broadmoor" That lad has totally lost the plot. I think Hughes will offload him (or try to at least) as he could have cost them about £95million if Bolton had got another goal. Will still have a bit of a chuckle if Chelski finally win their European Cup and "'Arry's boys" get demoted to the Europa League AbsaBleedingLutely!!! Paulus, your avatar is still a small blue ? - is that me or you? I have emptied my browser cache.

  13. Ah, but he got caught, didn't he? Appeared before the judge, pleaded guilty, and asked for soixante-huit other offences to be taken into account.
  14. I can make out the entire right hand upright of the H, and the top half of the left. (I zoomed my screen.) Likewise. I zoomed in on the iMac and can see this fairly clearly. I guess the people who can't see it don't have Macs
  15. Could be. I will try emptying it (but I have the feeling I saw Paulus restored to his usual glory earlier? so it may be moot).
  16. Yep..I want a Porsche Cayman and pair of beautiful discreet early 20's ladies....and a pint cos it is afternoon That's two pairs, surely? (Oops, sorry Debs)
  17. I suppose using a 1951 halfcrown with a 2 from 1942 would be a bit of a giveaway unless the forger could disguise silver as cupro-nickel
  18. I can make out the entire right hand upright of the H, and the top half of the left. (I zoomed my screen.)
  19. That's the same muppet who advertised here a CD of all Roman coin types. Then when I said I might be interested, but did it contain pictures and what format was it in, he ignored me. So caveat emptor, I say!

Hope my defence of CC didn't p*ss you off? I may have phrased it a bit strongly, if so, then sorry. Just remember that the legislation is clear - you're not allowed to melt any predecimal or decimal coins !!
  21. I mentioned CC, that i sent a coin back to him as i did'nt agree with the grade, he freely accepted the return and got my money back as did Chris Perkins i think mentioned the same. Personally, I expect dealers' grades to be accurate. After all, they will often have more grading experience than the majority of collectors. We are also often told that a dealer will only pay 50% of what a coin might be worth - therefore that is the dealer's profit margin. So when I see a dealer inflating the grade, I see that as an attempt to take an extra profit at the expense of the buyer. I too have complained about CC grading, but at least they are consistent and do accept returns. Nick, with all due respect, your 50% comment is way wide of the mark. I am lucky to buy from individuals at 70% of selling price and I will point out here that does not mean 30% profit for me. From that 30% I have to deduct tax, national insurance (tiny amount for self employed but still a deduction), VAT, advertising costs (presently about £110/month), stationery, electricity, phone, diesel etc etc. I don't want to fall out with you but please don't make ill informed sweeping statements about how much mark-up or profit dealers make. The truth is most of us make enough to get by and getting by means a 20% margin on your sales. I have bought from some members on here and I think you will find I have offered considerably more than 50% of either "book" or asking prices. I have also sold/given to some members on here and again I think you will find I have been more than generous. As for grading I try to be fair to the buyer, so harsh on myself, that comes from being a collector myself. Returns; in 3 1/2 years I have had one coin back without a reason given and 2 returned because the buyer already had those dates but had not recorded them in his inventory. Any decent dealer would give full refunds or offer replacement/part exchange if the customer so required. I am sure that the other full-time dealers on here will give similar reponses to mine in relation to the points you made. I think it very much depends on the coin(s). When I was a small time dealer, much of my stock was common, low-priced stuff like post-1952 crown-sized commemoratives. I wouldn't even pay FACE for them, knowing I would be lucky to get even 50p for one, and that they would 'hang around' forever. Likewise with UNC 60s predecimal denominations - the standard offer would be two times Face, which was probably way under 50% of book price, but they are such a glut on the market and so overrated in Spink. But for decent coins, I think you're absolutely on the button. 50% for something you can shift on to a paying customer immediately, is too little.
  22. That's just a blocked die scott - I'm sure there are several threads on this phenomenon?
  23. I came a cropper on the African shilling.
  24. Which reminds me of a cartoon I saw when that ad was running... Scene, a lonely road high in the forested Alps. Two cars have obviously just collided and lie - total flattened write-offs - on either side of the road. All you see is speech bubbles coming from each car : "Papa?" "Nicole?"
  25. I mentioned CC, that i sent a coin back to him as i did'nt agree with the grade, he freely accepted the return and got my money back as did Chris Perkins i think mentioned the same. So when I see a dealer inflating the grade, I see that as an attempt to take an extra profit at the expense of the buyer. I too have complained about CC grading, but at least they are consistent and do accept returns. I think that's the important point here. The only sufferers - as from many dealers, auctions, and eBay - will be the inexperienced who don't realise that what they bought is over-graded.
