  1. On the other hand, acetone is very good for removing nail varnish so I'm told
  2. Thanks for that Debbie - NOW I see it!
  3. When you say 'thanks for any help,' what is it you are asking? Welcome and, whatever it is, someone here will know the answer, I'm sure! Queen Victoria (x2) & George V (x1) Are these coins valuable? I spy, with my little eye...
  4. It's true. Those that do their homework don't tend to spend vast sums of money on eBay. Both with massive feedback so, in the absence of seeing anything cheap on their sites, who's laughing? Not at my expense fortunately! I'm now 'Watching' that 1946 3d. If we all do that for a range of his coins, he will be filled with false hope of imminent sales, only for hand-rubbing to be replaced by hand-wringing when none materialise. :D
  5. I stared at this for ages until I could work out the shape of the bird. Even so that's ridiculous!! I know! It looks more like a dead flamingo than anything, if you close your eyes..
  6. Well, as to grade, I would say the obverse is no better than EF but the reverse looks better, but the photos aren't great. BTW, there is no such grade as 'Choice' - it's the same kind of seller's puff as 'fresh, succulent, pan-fried...' on a restaurant menu. (What, you wanted stale and dry?? And yes, we really use pans to fry in... ) The colour is hard to place, but I'd say it's probably an appalling photograph where the dealer hasn't had the nous to remove an obvious colour cast.
  7. Ye gods. Almost £25 for a VF 1887 shilling that can be got for around a fiver! If they can sell 5 in week you will have to sell 25. It is a bit like another BNTA member asking £90 for a F 1946 3d. My purchase list is now limited although I can be tempted on other denominations...Farthings varieties 1st but I like a few hammered and selected top quality other coins. You're kidding me! Oh, you were just giving an "it's as if...", right?
  8. He is on record as saying he wants to be George VII. ...with Camilla as Min, William as Griptype-Thynne, and Harry as Eccles
  9. So England matches can't take place unless you open up?
  10. Ye gods. Almost £25 for a VF 1887 shilling that can be got for around a fiver!
  11. Same here. The most important thing is to collect what floats your boat, not whatever the voters say. Having said that, if you like Geo V shillings then I agree with the fact they are quite cheap. Buy the best you can afford, avoid date runs. The other nice thing about them is that if you're not bothered collecting varieties, there aren't any rare shillings - and that includes 1917, 1919, 1925, 1930, all fairly readily available.
  12. So kookaburra is Aussie slang for a gouge? That's odd, I thought it was a native bird
  13. I think he will be Neddy Seagoon the First
  14. The big difference is that patterns are produced by the Mint - or rarely, as in the case of Matthew Boulton, someone who is going to produce coins for the Mint - as prospective coin designs that are never used. Everything else are fakes, replicas, or privately-produced commemoratives (e.g. Edward VIII fantasy pieces). Real patterns are generally rare, and command high prices; I'd love to be able to afford some Boulton patterns!
  15. Dose lions are leopards! Hence the lack of mane and long body hair. (Sorry, just a personal bugbear - nearly everyone gets this wrong). Including the England sporting teams! "3 leopards on my shirt..." Yes - them too
  16. Apparently (according to the commentators) most things featured would be widely known internationally - pop music, Shakespeare, Blake, the Industrial Revolution, James Bond, Mr Bean, Paul McCartney, Chariots of Fire, etc. Not so sure about the Arctic Monkeys, but their cover of The Beatles' "Come Together" while those "doves" slowly flapped their luminous wings in the dark, I thought was a particular highlight. I'd have thought cash should be far quicker than credit cards!
  17. No, not replicas (though these and fakes do exist). The pattern 1933 pennies were designed by André Lavrillier with a supposedly more 'military' looking George V. The reverse is very similar to the actual issue, except that Britannia has a thicker trident and the waves are different. One of the patterns is uniface (just the obverse). The Lavrillier 1933s are contemporary with, but even rarer than regular 1933s, though do not command quite the prices (it's a difficult one to call as any 1933 appears so rarely). The first picture I ever saw of them was in an old edition of Collectors Coins GB. I think the reference to replicas and copies requires both the highlighted sentence and the previous one to be considered together. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I tink Mongo was referring to the numerous modern pieces dated 1933 appearing on ebay. You don't get very many Lavrillier patterns listed, unsurprisingly. Good point. But hopefully Chris will have learned something about 1933 patterns that he may not have known before?
  18. It's still cheap compared with the commission rates of auction houses.

  20. Yes the Mark Cavendish thing was a gross failure on two counts - 1. the Beeb computer not flashing up the names of the leaders, or the timing splits, so the commentators just had to guess and 2. did no-one inform Team GB how far ahead the leading pack were getting? It seems to me that if they'd caught up with plenty of miles to go, they would have given Mark the fighting chance of a sprint finish. I thought the ceremony was awesome. Nothing could have prepared me for the factory chimblies rising out of the ground, nor the actual forging of one of the five rings that floated overhead to form the Olympic logo. I thought the musical segment was a bit heavy on punk and hip hop, and would have liked a teensy weensy bit of prog in there (though perhaps Bohemian Rhapsody counts as prog?) You'll have to explain that one Peter! Unless you're against multiculturalism, I couldn't see anything for the Tories to gnash their teeth over.
  21. Edward VIII's face was not particularly symmetrical and he didn't like the side that should have shown on the coins - so he faced the other way. Yes, Edward VIII was extremely vain. This even superseded his political leanings, which would have made the correct right-facing portrait far more appropriate. George VI simply restored the natural sequence as if his brother had faced the proper way. Interestingly, the Abdication was so late in the year that the issue of 1937 George VI coins must have been a very rushed job. This can be seen in an almost unchanged portrait, and reverse designs that were more often identical than not.
  22. If you see a coin you really like, and it's 'only' VF (for example) and you could actually afford something approaching EF, don't be put off. A filler of this type, with lots of eye appeal, will be easy to move on, or even keep!
  23. Forgive me Rob. I was going to reply to this, but then I realised... I have no idea what you are talking about! I will have to start learning all these terms, I have just about got my head around what a pattern is. The joys of being a newb! Join the club! No, not replicas (though these and fakes do exist). 24. That's true, but blame the people who don't post in the varieties forum! Or use Search instead... In any case, having somewhere for ALL varieties would be almost like having a forum for all coins
