  1. had the penny and 5- for a while. look out for a 2008 £2 with no dot at the bottom of the obverse
  2. i have a couple where the black silver tone brought out the raised design. i also like nice brown bronze.
  3. i like silver that darkens around the edges but holds good shine, shows a bit of age
  4. ahh tin farthings. but yea, a rare coin is a rare coin if you can get it in your price range then great. i had the same problems as others with getting bits and pieces for mine, took me ages to find an example of James II in my budget this was it. cost me a tenner, found it at my dealers in the foreign stuff still cost me £10 he thought it was gun money, trust me this was one of the hardest purchases i ever made £10 for what is essentialy erm.. a piece of metal is probably the best way to describe it, but yea i needed that monarch, it was in budget, it was lower grade then i wanted but when will another come up gun money is vastly overpriced, british james II is all rare so will be way out of my league. i still havn't found any commonwealth for under £20 though i think personally, if you want a coin for your collection, have a GOOD look, bargains come up in odd places, i have coins i have no right owning with my budget, 1771 farthing, 1858 small date farthing, 1958 50 franc, (probably my most valueable coin by a long chalk) to name a few. i recommend scouring ebay with a fine tooth comb there are bargains to be had, i have had my fair share even as recently as last week, of course if you learn the values of things you could buy something on the cheap then sell it on for a profit (reading this thread makes me want to sell my 50 franc and buy a nice commonwealth piece... but yea.. not going to happen, because i enjoy all my coins. now what did i hear abouth 1825 farthings?
  5. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/20p-COLLECTORS-COIN-QUEEN-ROSE-HER-HAIR-RARE-/260689753158?pt=UK_Coins_BritishDecimal_RL&hash=item3cb251f446 2006 20p with "cud" basically, 11 bids and at £4.50 as i write i have a few of these i found in my change lol
  6. yup, i won that thing, did so much checking about first though. with the tides, thasnks for the other identifiers, i am confident now it is as the wheel is close to teeth and the P pointing is differant to my other similar grade viccies. bit of a risk, looked like someone else had a go as well, not that much money so worth a slight gamble
  7. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250723117410&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT is this what i think it is? 1897 high tide? looking at the sea line and the hemlines
  8. if it was america though, it would be a varity and worth a bit though. the thing is i would say it is doubled, but... the 19 is uneffected here is my 1988, it is clear but it only effects the 88 the leaf on that side, and the inside of the 0 of 20 it is bizzare i also thing the 88 is slighlty out of place (it is too close to the crown)
  9. wrong number was used lol
  10. hard to spot? i have found a few doubled obverse coins, and i myself have plucked out a 1988 with a similar error just the other day
  11. possible, i am investigaing a 1988 i got the other day wich looks like double 88
  12. yea thats what i thought so why?
  13. i don think there are any overstrikes in the 1880's? this upgrading of the mint will explain the low figures for 1882 silvers as well.
  14. maundy is usualy way out of my league only maundy i own, the mass kintage might explain why one of the I in III looks recut
  15. so they upgraded the mint in 1882, but it doesnt say if they minted anything. but Heaton did miss out the H before was it 1876?
  16. and why would you mint 20-100 coins in one place and not the other? lol
  17. yea like that.
  18. looks like a jetton, hard to see the details to identify properly though to me it looks like this one, which i got as 14-15 century jetton, from france
  19. shiny!!! i'm going to stick to my 1875H in poor then lol buns are way to expensive, £100 for a worn 1869? i got a battered and pitted 71 for a few quid a good 6 months ago :/ yea somone been polishing, and as for toning, you can be surprised, i found high grade toned brass :/
  20. because they went on a square rod after casting so they could scrape the excess metal off the edges cant be round or the coin would move the reason for a hole is so they can carry them on string also. i love those coins, i got my most interesting checked out on a chinese coin forum, because of its colouration, got a very detailed explanation of the reason why the colour was as it was.
  21. aluminium? still i prefer that over zinc
  22. i have very little of the old sized stuff. have 1985 50p and some old sized stuff just saved up... never bought any bar a 1975 5p on a thin planchet kept a few better grade pounds back (full lustre 83 aEF 84 and 92 and some 2008's) as these wear quick, as well as £2, i even have a unique 2008 (no dot between DEF and ELIZABETH)
  23. deosnt surprise me, 1981 wasnt excatly a date important enough to save a coin from, that and the mintage.
