  1. I can't see a repeat of the early 80's market and feel it won't actually drop. The Yanks are still ploughing into bullion. However take profit (as I once was advised by a very astute (and rich)Scotsman)....not Dave Shares;take profit on a 20% rise and sell at a 10% loss. Also choose your shares carefully. This can be said of coins generally. Common early good grade silver is flying. I've sold most of my junk silver and looking to move on anything less than nvf. The rest is staying.
  2. Hi Jgw Welcome to the forum. This site produces an excellent yearly coin book which covers 1797-to date.(Collectors coins GB) This includes mintages although note the earlier comments regarding actual nrs per date. Excellent value and also available as Ebooks....and no I'm not on commission. Ebay I'm sure is an excellent venue to cherry pick 3d's.I'm not aware of any dealers specialising in them and their reletive values make them rare at auctions. If you search "BNTA" members it will lead you to members and contact details. There is also "online coins" which maybe worth a look. Happy hunting. Peter
  3. Rob??? Dave I have the 21st March-3rd April 1980 magazine.I then leap to June. PM me if you would like it. Peter
  4. Hi If you google skegness coins you will find a coin shop about 9/10 miles North (coin & collectors centre). You can always search for the Olympic 50p's in the coin arcades Look out for cycling, rowing and boxing...these are the rarest. Don't forget to look in charity and antique shops.
  5. I will check out my stash tonight. It says a lot when I recently took 100+ coin news to the dump and yet I still have plenty of monthlies hanging around complete with post-its.
  6. Cash4gold I wonder how many punters have been separated from their sovs & guinea's for a fraction of their worth?

    Coin i Found

Hi It is a cartwheel coin dated 1797 36mm 28.5g it will be a 1d 41mm 56.7g a 2d worth maybe £1 or so (not in a collectable condition) Keep looking
  8. Your 1st mistake and I'm sure there will be plenty more.Steer clear of the type of coin you see in newspapers/on TV etc. They are gimmicks and marketing rubbish. Stick to proper dealers or even Ebay.
  9. I would reconsider getting the above "coins" they are gimmicks and worth nothing to collectors (or anyone else) Stick to collecting proper coin.
  10. It is a very rare date (although very battered). I'm sure one of the silver boys will be along soon. BTW you've posted twice.
  11. Scunny We're playing Bristols Titty
  12. now there was a man who knew the meaning of Shock and Awe ..for which the Japanese are still paying It is an argument on which I could easily bat on both sides. :unsure Thankfully it is the only time the A/bomb has been used in war. If it wasn't used then I don't think it wouldn't have been kept in cotton wool for the past 65 years. Tell that to the residents of Hiroshima. Actually no, tell it to the residents of Nagasaki, a city A-bombed quite unnecessarily after the US had received firm indications the Japs were ready to surrender. But no, Truman had to make a BIG GESTURE to the Soviets, "Look what we got, and we're not afraid to use it". I hate the man. Wasn't the surrender down to the Soviet intervention in the Pacific? History can't be re written.Imagine the pussy footing that goes on today was about in 1946. The decision to bomb the Japs was a decision made easy after Pearl Harbour and the barbaric treatment of captured allied soldiers. If the persecution of the jews was public knowledge at the time the Germans may of got one too and joe public would have clapped his hands.

  14. Lol, ONLY GEF Bob, at least you have one. It was a nice looking coin though, was that about as expected for an 1844? Is that also the first time 1 missing Colon has been noted on an 1844? Is Colin going to have to do more variety work on his website now? Well done Dave As far as I'm concerned that is clear.(not noted by Peck,Bramah,Freeman et all)or me although I haven't studied many (I got a lower grade one many years ago and haven't sought to improve...both top stops are less prominant) My guess before the auction would of been £600.Lets hope 1/4d's don't go the way of Buns Once Colin publishes the market will rocket...and yes if I had spotted the FID.I might have gone to Mrs Peter for a release of funds.
  15. Well spotted Dave BUT with the 1838 version of DEF. its value (according to CCGB) is LESS than DEF: Although in my opinion it is scarcer. I will concede on the FID though as the "top" full stop on FID & DEF is faded on mine.

  17. Hi Bob I bought a few coins when recently it was $2 to £....can't wait Gold will rocket as will all your exports but you will become prisoners in your own country. Bill Clinton seems a good idea again.
  18. It would of slotted in nicely but like Bob I hadn't noticed it. It went a bit fierce in the end with only 2 bidders. In hindsight I wouldn't of been in with a chance. I wonder what a 49 1d would make in that condition?
  19. No wonder the USA is going bust. Maybe its time to grade the political parties.
  20. You have some nice coins. Let all your family and friends know you collect coins. You maybe suprised how many people have some tucked away in a drawer collecting dust. With your silver coins pre 1920 are 92.5% silver (1913 3d) and pre 1947 (to 1920) are 50% silver. Collectors coins GB produced by predecimal is an excellent little book and I believe the 2005 edition is free online. Get to know a few coins to look out for.You will see hundreds of 1967 coins.
  21. Greek coinage discussions are few and far between on predecimal. I do know the owls are very popular in the USA and getting a real one is an issue. I would suggest Coinpeople might assist you more. As Rowan Atkinson once said "as wise as an eel and as slippery as an owl"
  22. Don't make an ass of yourself ...not enough teeth.
  23. Hi Wybrit Have you a link for the counterfeiting? Thanks
  24. This has been doing the rounds. Some are uncanny. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1017090
