It is on Ebay for £25 plus £2.75 maybe more for Germany. If you wait until March/April it will be in stock on Amazon and about £17 (like last year). If you have a Spink from about 2007 this would suffice as a guide.

I knew of Colin's site, of course, and of his enthusiasm. What I didn't know was that he was systematically "doing a Freeman" ("doing a Gouby"? that sounds vaguely rude, somehow ). Once bitten twice shy with me. However I have taken a punt on awful pictures that SOMETIMES have paid off. A few years back I bought "green" coloured coins from a seller for very little...yep it was his photographic skills...the give away and why I had a punt were the farthing specialist envelopes visible stating reasonable grades.

Do you think that's a result of less study, Peck, or genuinely less variation? People do like their pennies... I think it is probably more to do with fewer varieties - farthings had a lower priority anyway, but the smallness of the design meant it was a better balanced strike anyway (look at how many survive in really decent grades). A similar case could be made for halfpennies, and Freeman covered them pretty comprehensively. On the other hand, if you want to do the study ... Farthings are being processed.

They are not Europe. As previously advised they are likely Asian/Arabic and not necessarily ancient. Good luck on your quest for info but you may have more sucess on Coinpeople which is a bit more cosmopolitan.

But herein lies the dilemma for all collectors. Any collection, farthings included, will inevitably result in a range of grades amongst the consitutents. You just have to grin and bear it unless you say I refuse to get an example of xxxx because it doesn't exist in better than fine or whatever. Otherwise you may as well restrict yourself to the packaged rubbish issued by the RM (or equivalent) which is probably as consistent a product as you can get in numismatics. I confess William 111 does give me a big problem...you see a beautiful obverse...the heart pounds...your palms sweat only to find the date on the reverse is chopped off or there is a massive flan error.The dealer describes it as VF when it is green and porus and ugly as sin. Now where have I heard VF for issue.

Next time you are out dining what will it be....6 portions of boiled rice OR steak au poivre? & ebay is like McDonald's...everyone uses's it but questions themselves why afterwards.

Put your pistol away and take a better shot at quality rather than quantity. They look as if they have been cleaned.

I was a date collector but have surgically removed this monkey from my back. Farthings are the only complete series I have regardless of grade. Everything else is being sacrificed although I have kept examples of every monach/bust/type and even duplicates of the better coins. I saw no merit in keeping key dates in F when I have the date either side in EF+.

Peck knocking Peck Ir you are serious about pre 1860 copper this book is a must (it will set you back about £150 for a reasonable copy). Modern copper/bronze (post 1860) is covered by previous posts. Please define your interests a bit more so tips can be provided.There are even internet sites that are useful. Aboutfarthings...a brilliant site by a forum member. I actually quite liked Blair.It was the idiots around him who torched our economy.It happened before in the pre Thatcher era. Whatever the coalition/Cameron/Glegg run with it is important that labour bite their tounges and get behind the country and not try to score points. As I've mentioned before if there is a choice buy British,holiday in UK for a change and spend your money on quality British coins

Is that not a case of clashed dies rather than ghosting? Could well be a clashed die although the rest of the reverse is struck OK (apart from the 3rd prong). I've had examples with the prong gradually disappearing with no sign of Vickies head.But when the prong has gone completely the head is always there.

Its slag off UK time. However our meat,fish,vegetables and fruit are class leading. Whisky,cider & real ale (IMO)are the worlds finest. OK we don't mass produce anything,we get our electricity and soon to be Nuke Power from the French (EDF). I go and have been all over the world but as a package UK suits me fine

The more I look at that 1/- the more I'm convinced its wrong. Has anyone dropped a note to the buyer (& seller)? I have a feeling this is all innocent.It would be interesting to trace the history of this coin.
