Hi Paddy, If you don't get things graded, it would be best to send it to someone like https://www.thenumistacker.com/ who will handle that all for you. He deals with all sorts of coins and sends them off to NGC for grading on your behalf. Here's a video explaining what he does. The cost of the grading depends on the value of the coin really. The charges for the categories differ, as some are more valuable than others, and others need more research. You're probably looking at around £50 odd to get this graded with NGC, but his charges are detailed on the website. The worst that can happen is that NGC refuse to slab it as "not genuine", in which case you've lost your money, regardless of whether they plastic it up or not. Having it graded may make it easier to sell on somewhere like ebay, but it's a crap shoot half the time on there. Difficult to tell what grade you'd get, but looking at the others on ebay, you might get an MS60 at best which roughly equates to EF to gEF.

Coin prices continue to rise

Unfortunately, when things get chucked in a slab, a lot of the associated paperwork goes awol. Had it before with some farthings. -

Well done. I didn't get the one I was after as it went for about 40% more than I was prepared to pay for it, but I did pick up an alternative which is an improvement on my current one. -
I saw this crop up last night when browsing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225686953019?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D777008%26algo%3DPERSONAL.TOPIC%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20221115143056%26meid%3D718fac819f5549e887ee9b20b8a2d979%26pid%3D101612%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26itm%3D225686953019%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D4375194%26algv%3DRecentlyViewedItemsV2&_trksid=p4375194.c101612.m4236&_trkparms=parentrq%3A8689251b1890ab8cd32b4309ffff6ca2|pageci%3A60cde8aa-29e9-11ee-93fc-6ec085d988a6|iid%3A1|vlpname%3Avlp_homepage I messaged the seller to say you can pick these up for £60 and sent a link to one, and told them it really isn't what you think it is. I got a four word reply saying "not the same coin". Now either this seller has had their pants pulled down themselves, which I think is more than likely, or they just read the Daily Mirror and take that as gospel. Either way, the whole eBay description of the coin in the listing is a masterclass in Donald Trumpism.

Afternoon, Just picked this 1697B sixpence up from the Morton & Eden auction as it was listed as an R over sideways R with the overstrike quite clear. It also has a die rotation on the reverse of about 90 degrees. It seems to be an unlisted variety as I can't find anything relating to this after scouring the internet, and after calling into Baldwins afterwards, they didn't recall seeing one like this before. Photos are as best I can do with the rudimentary camera, so any thoughts most welcome.

I asked this question to a well known retailer only recently after picking up a couple of proofs. Lighthouse capsules were ok to keep them in, along with the small cellophane envelopes that they are sent out in. It's the PVC ones that they need removing from immediately. So I now keep mine in the cellophane envelope inside my cabinet. I'm sure others with more experience than I will chip in with their opinions.

Agree completely. With the funds at their disposal, a decent camera setup, or failing that, a coin microscope, would make it look more appealing, instead of looking like it's been scanned on the photocopier.

That's great. Thank you very much, saved a lot of head scratching. 👍

I'm just having a look through Freeman and wanted to query what the small numbers are next to the year date on some of the coins please? For example, the 1870 penny has a small 14 by the side of it. What have I missed?

This looks far nicer in your pictures than it did on the Baldwins site. No idea how they image their coins, but I've never liked them.

This is the blurb from the Tennants website: For those with an interest in error coins the forthcoming sale will feature a rare 20p Error Coin with Royal Mint certification. This 1990 20p has been struck on a copper-plated steel blank intended for one of the other countries the Royal Mint produces coins for; a spectacular error and the only one of its kind known, on discovery the coin was featured in the national press. The coin is encapsulated and graded MS63 by ANACS and is complete with Royal Mint letter of accreditation (estimate: £1,200-1,800 plus buyer’s premium).

A lot of the English language is getting butchered at the moment. Listening to kids outside the shop the other day was like listening to someone speak another language.

Just saw this on the Yahoo page: https://uk.yahoo.com/news/the-rare-20p-coin-that-could-be-worth-£1800-185645546.html Apparently paid £50 off of eBay. You win some, you lose some.

This one just screams "COME AND BUY ME!" Form an orderly queue please. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314673920956?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D777008%26algo%3DPERSONAL.TOPIC%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20221115143056%26meid%3D8205371e550c4927af40316c73ffe299%26pid%3D101612%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26itm%3D314673920956%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D4375194%26algv%3DRecentlyViewedItemsV2&_trksid=p4375194.c101612.m4236&_trkparms=parentrq%3A08b7487a1890a4f3a96c96cbffff4876|pageci%3A8b10ffb0-16b6-11ee-99e7-b698a8f7d732|iid%3A1|vlpname%3Avlp_homepage

Any chess players on here that use chess.com? I'm not particularly good but I play a lot of 3 minute blitz games, so if anyone gets involved there, let me know as I'm happy to give anyone a game.

Confirmation of Dies Please
Kipster replied to Kipster's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Great, thanks both. Getting the hang of these now, so that's my Saturday afternoon sorted out... -
Morning all, Just wondered if you could possibly confirm the die pairing on this 1861 halfpenny for me please? I'm sure I haven't asked before, so please forgive me if it's a duplicate. I'm using the great halfpennyvariety site to work it out, and I think this is 7 + G (missing rocks?) variety. Be grateful if someone could confirm for me please. Thanks.
-
I think that might be a 2 + B as the cross points directly between 2 beads?

Interesting. I have several NGC graded farthings and one in particular (I think I may have mentioned on here before) has one of those little white crumbs of whatever on Victoria's chest. It's tiny but I notice it. It isn't a proof so not that concerned really, but this new addition is an 1868 proof rated as R17, and I really don't want any grubby detritus attaching itself to the coin for obvious reasons. The proofs I've bought in the past are usually dispatched in a small cellophane pocket inside a paper envelope, but that's obviously no use for long term storage. I have some coins in the Lighthouse capsules, but I'd want them to be quite a good fit to prevent it from sliding around inside it.
-
Yes, you're right thinking about it. Brain freeze my end. Ta.
-
Afternoon all, Probably a simple question but one I think I should ask. I've just acquired a couple of proof farthings and wanted to check that these will be perfectly happy living in my cabinet? Being proofs do they need to be protected in any other way to make sure they remain in the condition they went in at? Cheers.

Any garden pics this year?
Kipster replied to copper123's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Nope, that's as fresh as a daisy new turf. Artificial grass is anathema to me as someone that maintains gardens for a living. Absolutely hate it. And unfortunately I live next door to someone that loves the bloody tree rats, and the actual rats that have now been disturbed by the other neighbours building work and are running all over the show. Real pests, and so are the rats as well. Thanks mate. It cost enough and it won't be being done again in my lifetime. That's a nice sized plot you have there. Plenty of opportunity to change things if you wanted to, and to get it how you want it to look.
