Not quite right, Peck. The only reason you are directed to the PhotoBucket site, is because that is where TG hosted his screenshot. The original webpage is here and, in my opinion, saleroom.com is one of the best auction sites out there. Bah. I think that's my fault guys. I must have somehow picked up an active link rather than an one from photobucket when I couldn't get the usual direct upload to work. Sorry! That's not what I meant to happen ... obviously!

Sooner or later one of these will pass through enough auction houses to give it provenance. And once it has an appearance of authenticity it's not going to be good for either the owners or the hobby, IMHO. The problem is, what to do? I've written to the auctioneers in this case, but nobody can monitor all sales everywhere. Particularly mixed lots, which often have poor or no photos. And while such coins are never going to fetch big bucks, it's still a loss to someone, somewhere. [/rant]

Not really. That doesn't work for me. Neither alt and prtscn together or alt then prtscn seem to do anything. Going to the pictures folder where all the jpags are kept doesn't result in an image of the screen appearing either when I do a ctl-V. Never mind, I'll just stick with writing it out manually. Pressing PrtScn on its own doesn't seem to do anything either. Peter, you are right. Maybe the computer/operator is too old - or broken. Pressing PRTSC just appears to hold the image Rob. Like doing Copy, nothing else happens until you are in a document or whatever and tell it to Paste. I need an open image based window - I use Paint as it came with the computer, but I guess anything you can draw in as, although you can do it in say, Word, I have no idea how you'd save that as an image file! - then with that visible press Ctrl+V. The whole screen then appears as the Paint image. I still have to save that (usually to my desktop) to use it. That help?

Yeah, what they said ^ And yes, I had to upload it to photobucket and link from there. I did send a message to Chris about the direct linking not working, but he hasn't replied to an earlier email I sent so he may well be busy.

Ditto.. I couldn't see how to enlarge the warning to give the full address path. But hopefully you can sort it easily enough Colin. I'm using Internet Explorer 8 with AVG Free.

Tricky. I'm not sure there's any certain way if slab and label have been copied, though presumably PCGS could check and confirm it for you after the sale. As for provenance, I just don't get the impression that Americans are big on provenance. Certainly (British) coins I've bought haven't come with any and they tend to be the only kind where it's mentioned in auction listings ... .. have you thought of asking this question on Coin Community? It's US based and there are many experienced collectors there who could advise. Of course, they might say, if you're not sure, walk away ...

Help with Russian 1/4 Kopek, stumped
TomGoodheart replied to azda's topic in Enquiries about Non British coins
Not sure. I see what you mean about the garland thingy, but I'm not sure if it's just the design for that date or signifies a different mint. Anyway, there are some here Coin Archives for the reference numbers: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/results.php?search=1%2F4+kopek&s=1&results=100 Edit: And I've emailed Chris to tell him about the upload error, though I don't know if he's about at present. -
Maybe everyone else is just out enjoying the summer weather? Or I need to change my deodorant. Either way I'm begining to think the forum is broken again. This has to have been the quietest weekend in recent years for posting!

Seems to work from a hosting site like photobucket, but direct uploads don't seem to work for me either. Edit: Just tried again in case, but got "Error The server returned an error during upload" as before.

One for the farthing boys
TomGoodheart replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Oh, and if you did fancy doing this .. here's how! (Though the guy who wrote it used US pennies. You'd need to adjust for farthings) http://jproe.wordpress.com/2012/09/09/how-i-spent-four-days-of-my-vacation-or-do-you-have-11966-pennies-that-you-dont-know-what-to-do-with/ -
One for the farthing boys
TomGoodheart replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Sort them. Keep the best of the bunch. Have the next five best slabbed by NGC or PNGS and sell through someone like Heritage. And the rest ... -

They reckon £5 each? But how long would it take you to sell the things? -

Mmm .. consistent with the sorts of prices he has on his website I guess .... -

The link is corrupted. Amended ebay link And, I've no idea. Maybe because it's slabbed and Americans like that sort of thing. Though there are 3 others at that grade and 3 at MS66, so not really rare, is it? -
1963 proof penny
TomGoodheart replied to RChris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Good learning experience Chris. Personally I'd stick to UK based dealers who have better photographs, but that's just me. And for reference, this is an Austrlian 1963 Proof penny, showing the sort of quality I'd expect and that people pay the extra for. I couldn't find a British one, but you hopefully get the idea. -
Scrap silver advice please.
TomGoodheart replied to Oscar's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Online dealers are fairly simple, though you pay for the simplicity via the price they offer. These people offer better prices than I was able to find at high street 'gold dealers'. However, that said I've never used them, although I believe another member here has: hattongardenmetals.com Obviously you'd want to check how their prices compare against spot and I don't know how it works with silver that isn't Brittania or sterling standard. -
You should be able to view recent charges Colin. In your Ebay summary page click on the 'Account' tab. You then need to click on 'Fees'. You may need to then click on 'Customise view'! This allows you to view up to four months ebay charges. You should then get an itemised list a bit like this: With luck you should then be able to work out what you're being charged for. Note that this is only ebay fees and doesn't include PayPal!

I don't think it's entirely fixed as I seem to get logged out every now and then. Something that never used to happen before. OK, I can now log in, which is something. But before all the changes I stayed logged in!

There were problems with a new server I believe: http://www.british-coins.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=8053&st=0&gopid=87573&

I've only just got in. Chris mentioned on Facebook (which might be a handy place for people to 'meet' if ever the site is down again) the hosts had moved the site onto another server. Whether that caused the problems, or was to resolve some, I don't know. But I'm glad we're back! I'm also glad I haven't just signed into a phishing scam. The new address confused me for a minute. At least seeing you lot I know that I shan't be the only one on this botnet.

You know.. I think it might be! OK, it probably wasn't brilliant before it was .. er, improved. But even so .. And it's a bit pricey for an "engraved" coin, or I'd suggest it to Debbie. But as a piece of art brut ... well, it might be worth the money! Assuming you can't afford this:

Really, not a laugh. In fact it's so horrible a crying 'smiley' is needed. But I just had to post this. The moral being .. don't let your children play with your coins people! 200937301895

Interestingly I was wondering about a variant of this just yesterday. Buy an MS65 and say an MS67 coin. Find yourself a slab, re-encapsulate the MS65 with the MS67 labels. Resubmit the MS67 raw for re-slabbing. If you can find some of those nice green CAC beans to add ... ... let the money roll in. Which is my way of saying that this whole slabbing thing, like anything else, is only a good idea until someone thinks of a way of using it to rip people off.

A Hoard of Coins
TomGoodheart replied to BenByfield's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Welcome Ben! I thought you might get a more detailed answer about your penny here. Though a sharper photo would help the price estimates I think. I hope you find it interesting. I know I'm always learning. And .. had you thought of asking if you could have a coin as your commission (or part of)? This penny could be a nice start to a collection of Victorian bronze? Tom
