  1. This? http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=3151&pos=27 Afghanistan silver drachm Stylised bull/ horseman. 9th century.
  2. I have just checked my post above and an hour later I still have the facility to edit it. But what I have found is that sometimes the reply box refuses to take any text until I click on the 'toggle' switch icon I highlighted with an arrow. I wonder if AardHawk is talking about that (since, unless you know 'the trick' it would then appear that you can't reply at all) I've not had any problems with jpegs below 100KB. In fact, because photobucket has been so crap lately I've stopped linking to my photos there in preference to just resizing them and directly inserting. The only tricky step is remembering to click on the 'insert into post' button so they appear where I want. And to avoid being entirely negative about the new software (which Chris had little choice other than to change) I do like the Auto Save function as it's saved me having to retype one of my monologues on a few occasions now when my laptop has messed up!
  3. I quite agree, edit in this new system is annoying. I'm sure when we had the old format forum, editing was simpler! While I found the edit button easily enough .., (there it is!) ^ the fact that I have to then choose that strange toggle switch (arrowed) or click on 'Use full editor' before any of what I type appears in the bloody box bemuses me. And if I want to then cut and paste part of what I've written, or if I want to highlight text in bold or italics, I have to click it again!! As for nesting urls within a picture link from the internet (which I used to be able to do quite quickly, so long as I could see the code) well, I have to rethink that each time. Why it's clunkier .. I have no idea. And as for the fact that if you try to edit too quickly it 'activates flood control' and if you leave it too long the edit function disappears ... yeah, that's irritating too!
  4. Sadly the bust (which would be a great help in deciding what you've got) is unclear. Which of course is a numismatic term for it .. being a mess! However, I believe the reverse reads ABEL ON LVNDO[] (which is the name of the moneyer who struck it). This would make it a coin of John or Henry III as those are the only two kings he coined for. Beyond that and without a recognisable bust it's pure guesswork. But the R in HENRICVS is quite ornate and looks like the illustration in Spink for type 6c (Spink 1355) making it Henry III (1216-72) Though there are others here with more experience, so I'd wait for them to confirm or blow my idea out of the water before you view that as conclusive! Oh, and welcome to predecimal!
  5. Looks like a short cross hammered penny, though we'd need bigger photos to identify it better. It reads HENRIC[] so a King Henry (or maybe John). About 800 - 850 years may have passed since it was made, so yeah, reasonably old.
  6. http://www.demilked.com/coin-paintings-tales-you-lose-andre-levy/ Though didn't I hear that the US Mint already make these?
  7. Mmmm .. when I view 'new content', threads that go beyond one page all have little boxes below with the page numbers. I click on the last one, which admittedly takes me to the top of that page. But better than 252 pages away! Alternatively (and I've not tried this) try Content I've Not Read in the pick box to the left of the main thread listings maybe? I think with the old format it was possible to display threads either to start with the first or alternatively, most recent, post. But I can't see a way to do that now ... Sorry.
  8. Well, oddly, that's what it says here! http://www.baldwin.co.uk/coins/great-britain/siege-pieces/charles-i-carlisle-siege-shilling-1645.html?usrc=1
  9. You should append 'Acceptable to Geoff' to the bottom of the list.
  10. It's easily fogotten That dave has To contend with an iphone Programmed to talk German (which Surely has to be The Worst of Both Any Worlds!). hence the Odd Das Capitalisation and Quirky spellung! .
  11. Let me guess. Lot 591. Of course. And I even had reservations because the reverse was off centre, but that clearly didn't matter to the eventual buyer. I'm just hoping it was a bit of a feeding frenzy as the market has been so lean of late. If these prices reflect a new level I'm not sure where the mid- to better end collectors (which is how I think of myself) are going to find material to keep the collection going.. .. I might have to muscle into Scott and Generic's bargain bucket game! DON'T DO IT. RESIST Let's just say 591 went to a member of this forum. I thought everyone was a member of this forum Rob! But if it's a regularly posting member, does that mean we can hope to see better photos of it in the new acquisitions thread?

  13. Yeah, I just missed out on the only thing I wanted... ... by £500 ..
  14. Egads. Just watching Spink and thinking I might as well give up any hope of buying nice coins in future. Most are way over estimate. And would be well over what I could possibly afford. So much for improving the collection....
  15. Oh, and since we're talking music .. this is a bit more me: http://now.msn.com/mark-sidney-johnson-shows-the-history-of-the-guitar-solo ..well, the Muse bit towards the end anyway!
  16. Is this a good time to mention I have Roger Dean's (who did the Yes artwork) book in my attic? He either autgraphed it or a sticker, I forget which! A most valuable antique, I'm sure for any Yes aficianados!
  17. Phew! Thank goodness that's over! But, wait! What's this?? It's St James' ....and Baldwins and Spink (and Goldberg and Heritage too, if you're into that sort of thing)... Why are there are so many bloody auctions in the Autumn?! Surely it would be better for both auction houses and their customers to spread out the offerings across the year? Me? I'm off to raid the penny jar and start crossing my fingers ... .
  18. Haven't we seen this one before? A Partially naked picture of a man in a mankini. Plus mankini included
  19. What? All wind and wuthering? Sorry, you'll need to have read the other thread to get that.
  20. As a mod I can see the warning points for everyone. But rather like the 'Like This' button, it doesn't appear to work. Or at least, not for me .... maybe just as well you say! As for the blank avatars .. no idea. One for Chris I'm afraid.
  21. Ah, but the principle doesn't factor in emotion or subjectivity. With the Sheldon, you see people saying that an NGCS 70 is better than an NGC 70 and so on. It's not an absolute science. And I can understand what Dave is saying. Once you have slabbed your 'best ever' then you're stuck with it, even if (somehow) a better coin turns up. If we were talking about computers using lasers to assess exactly how many molecules of silver had been knocked off, or how many microns flatter the nose on a 1935 crown had become between the day it was struck and today, you could have an absolute scale. But this is some guys sitting at a table, no? So things like uncertainty and subjectiveness and just how pretty a coin looks 'in the hand' can sneak in to the whole process! Edit. [Doh. Or I could have just said "What Rob said" ]
  22. The folk on Coin Community are fine and friendly. But if you want expert knowledge about British coins I don't think you can do better than here!
  23. I think there's a difference between unpopular and just ... well, not popular. I don't believe people will avoid a TP graded coin if it's at a competitive price. It's just for most UK collectors it's a bit irrelevant. I think we don't see the point of paying for someone else's opinion and storage is a bit of a problem unless all your coins are slabbed. And there certainly isn't the market here that there is in the US where a(n) raw (unslabbed) coin, or one certified by a lesser known TPGS, just won't make the price of a PGCS or NGC slab. The coin market in the US is just very different from the one here. Things might change if we see more high quality Chinese fakes. But then, it hasn't solved the problem in the US and there's no reason to think the UK will be any different. Unless people see a benefit from grade/slabbing it's unlikely to catch on much more than it has so far. IMHO.
  24. OK, here's my take eddie. Which is basically the same as Coinery's! If you plan to sell coins to US buyers, it may be worth slabbing. However you'd be best off using PCGS or NGC as American buyers know them and don't know CGS. PCGS is said to be a bit stricter. However neither is guaranteed to be reliable with non-US coins. If you're planning to sell to CGS collectors .. well, there aren't that many of them. And for most everyone else, it's a coin in a slab that will need breaking out. Slab premium? In the US, yes. Here, very debatable anyone will pay more for a coin just because it's slabbed. If you want to protect your coins from finger marks/ damage, well, capsules will do that for cheaper. And if you like the slabs or having your coins listed in the CGS population reports / hall of fame, ... go for it.
