It's not a bad one is it. Grades around GVF-NEF I'd say. Unfortunately its collectability is drastically reduced by the green bit on the obverse. If it were mine I'd probably price it at £15.00 but wouldn't expect it to fly of the shelf that quickly because most collectors don't want verdigris (because it can spread to other coins). Without the green bit i'd price it perhaps around £50.00 The green bit may be removable if you've caught it early enough, but even if it is it will leave an unpleasant dark mark at the very least.

Assuming the coins are the original ones in the boxes, you have described (very well) the 1950 and 1953 proof sets. There wasn't a 1950 UNC set and the 1953 UNC set came in a plactic transparent wallet without the crown.

I have 2 mint sealed bags containing 4,800 1966 halfpennies and I sell them at a rate of about 1 per year! I intend to attach a free one to each copy of the next coin book that I'll be doing (Collectors Coins GB 2007). Actually, I need another £5 face value bag (of 2,400x 1966) if anyone has one?

Well, the UK warehouse/courier people have 600 of the old edition to sell first, so you'd have to buy 600 from Smiths before the new ones started coming through (and you're most welcome to do that!). And, I don't actually have any of the new ones personally (just a sample) so you're going to have to wait until the old stock is sold.

I've just had a reprint of 1,200 x CCGB2006 done. These later ones don't have such a curly cover and have had known errors removed (eg. 'rsearchers' on the back cover, and quite a few from the inside too!) The new one has '33rd Edition, Re-print © 2006' as the 3rd line of the first page. This means that a total of 6,700 copies have been printed. Of those there are about 2,300 left and if they sell out then that's a 34% sales increase compared to the 2005 version.

I don't personally have anymore 34's at the moment :-( I think I've probably handled more wreath crowns recently, particularly 34's, than any other coin dealer anywhere. I bought one once from an old bloke who's dad actually did get a '34 crown handed to him as cash at the bank he worked at in the 40's. He was clever enough to realise the significance and exchanged it for 2 of his own half crowns (25p, just to put it in perspective!). In 2004, his son sold it to me for £1000! It was, from memory, approaching EF but had some ugly edge knocks. I think I got £1300 for it.

It can be quite difficult to tell with coins that have a little wear. Usually Maundy coins are kept pretty nice, so if you have an UNC YH threepence it's probably a maundy.

Yes, I was surprised how quickly it went up! I think it probably is a record for a non proof '34 crown already, but there is so long to go it might just go completely bonkers. I do hope so. I think I'll put the images and resulting price on the website somewhere, and probably write off to Coin News, because it's good for credibility to sell such a coin for such a sum! And I could even feature it in CCGB2007.

You also have a 1934 crown up for sale on ebay -- one of the nicest I've seen. 1934 Crown Lovely isn't it!

The edge error always has missing letters from 'DECUS' and at least 2 large spaces between words. A VF one went for £865 on ebay recently. As far as I'm aware, there is only one type of error on the 35 non proof, but slipages may well have caused more types. The error on the 35 proof version is due to the 3 part collar being arranged incorrectly. I have a 1951 error edge on eBay, which is not recorded.

It's an unnoficial 1953 Coronation coin, made quite crudely by a company somewhere to commemorate the event. It's not in the best shape and even it it were, they are not really very collectable I'm afraid.

If it's bent it's scrap bronze, unless it's some kind of rare type, which it probably isn't. There are a couple of penny people in here, no doubt one of them will notice this soon. I'm not sure if there are varities of 1863 and my Freeman (book on the subject) is right at the other side of the room!

I have an Edward VII Shilling with Bessie written on it, or at least I did have. It was popular at the time for young chaps about town to have the names of sweethearts engraved on coins. In fact, they did a lot more with coins back then, they coloured them in, made them into all kinds of elaborate jewellery etc. Probably because they actually contained some precious metal.
