  1. No, not really, I merely skimmed and recognised a place name I have a little collection of George III fakes. Nothing special though, you can see some of them on the website in the area where I wrote about them.
  2. I think it's nice, I don't see a problem with toning if it's ended up that way because they didn't know the packaging would do that in 1911. It's original, it's part of the coin. And you're not using my bandwidth, oh thankyou so much!
  3. That's Great stuff 'dead king'. Super coins. I was born near Eltham and lived there a few years. We used to hang around the Castle there, and walk past it on the way to the pub.
  4. Well, in case she comes back, I won't say. Don't want to go airing dirty laundry, but it was nothing to do with the way she spoke/spelled. I said something that i think she must have taken as being quite rude.
  5. Is that a proof, toned from being in it's case of issue? I had one like that.
  6. What is a "regular American" Chris? I guess that means my car has a hood not a bonnet, have no "u" in my color and don't get to see the Queen at Christmas? No I meant, the last American to use this forum on a regular basis. I couldn't possibly say what a 'regular American' was, as I'm quite sure you have a diverse and varied culture, and it would be far to complicated to generalise. I'll tell you when I've been to America and seen for myself. I live in Germany, so I'm afraid I miss the Queens speech too.
  7. We most certainly will not! You'll find us very much set in our ways. You'd better be careful you don't start speaking and spelling properly. (Watch out for Emperor Oli ) The last regular American hasn't been back for quite a while after I think I may have offended her
  8. I sometimes think there must only be about 50 serious coin collectors in the world....And I probably know 45 of them! And you didn't find this place without being told about it first?
  9. He never usually needs all that much persuading does he With all his student loans going on coins I wonder what he uses for books, or what he eats?
  10. Wow, all of a sudden there were 3 new American looking faces! Sylvester did mention he would go recruting tonight, and he has obviously left the Kings shilling in the bottom of your glasses. Welcome. Are you by any chance the chap who bought the George III Coin book off me earlier, and knows Tom?
  11. John, It depends on how 'good' your good is. Coins are graded precisely, and the value depends on the exact amount of wear. If they are both very circulated they will be worth very little. There's some useful info on grading and the scarcer dates in my advice hub: http://www.predecimal.com/coinadvice.htm If they are good enough to cover the postage costs, you can sell them to me, I always offer 60% of what I hope to eventually get for collectable coins. You can email me cp@predecimal.com
  12. That's very true, and the same for pennies of course if you take 'red' in the American sense, meaning lustre. Very sly Slyvester!
  13. That's a strange question, I'll do what I have done before and compare coins to one of my other interests: How much are Volkswagen Golfs worth 1980 - 1990? The same as with coins, it depends on the date/variety and most importantly, the condition. A worn Golf may just be worth scrap value (same goes for coins), a mint condition VW Golf with low mileage may be worth considerably more...Same goes for coins. You'll have to be a lot more specific John.
  14. Yes, Like 1934 Crowns....Only 932 ever made. In the last 3 years I've handled 6+ of them and can probably tell you where at least 20 of them are. The rarity of a particular coin is all very well, and of course it makes them harder to come by, but if you wave enough pound notes around and they'll come to you!
  15. Master Jmd, I dare say if you had enough money and made enough people aware of your hard cash and need for a BU 1806 penny, you could probably find one every six months!
  16. No probably not. Until 1952 they just recorded the number of coins of each denomination that were struck. They didn't even take the years into account (eg if a 1938 dated coin was struck in Jan 1939 it would be counted in the 1939 mintage number)
  17. I need it more than you! (Actually I think I've found one for £100, so I may not need that one)
  18. I doubt accurate records were kept Jmd. At that time the mint didn't actually record the number of coins minted with the actual '1940' date, so I doubt anyone knows the number of 1940 single exergue.
  19. Don't be silly, you can use my pictures as much as you like in this forum!
  20. Well those are both pictures of my albums you've stolen () from this website, so yes, you'll find those ones are very good. Albums are the most affordable way of storing coins, and those examples will certainly look after them fine. The smaller one cannot be added to, and the ability to add pages is usually preferred. I'd also be pleased to give a 10% discount as you are a forum member.
  21. That isn't really the greatest picture in the world is it! I can't tell what it is. For an evaluation, email a list with dates/denominations (or metal type and sizes in mm if not sure) to cp@predecimal.com, and I'll see what I can do. The fee depends on the exact number of coins and how difficult they are.
  22. Bowl shaped coins do exist, but they are not normally 2 inches! If it was smaller, I'd say it could well be a real coin, Most likely Byzantine. It only stands a chance of being of any value if the detail is clear and it can be identified. (2 inches seems a bit large though!) Are all the coins you have to be valued of similar appearance? If they are modern (within the last 300 years or so) I can probably help. Often I can give a rough idea over email.
  23. Chris...any explanation for the existence of a 1927 halfpenny struck shilling size with a milled edge? Sorry, I completely missed your question Coppers. I heard once that the mint workers back then used to sometimes muck around just for the fun of it, the milled edge half penny that's shilling size but bronze could be as a result of that. It is also possible (although unlikely because it is definitely small) that it could have been a normal halfpenny that had a milled edge rolled onto it by a machine in later life.
  24. Gouby is the best identification guide for pennies I'll be meeting Mr Gouby at the London coin fair, and he'll be bringing me one of his books.
  25. Yes, Custard is probably right, I had it in my head it was a Halfpenny, HPJ. But the sea on the ebay coin is just like the picture of 3961 (on the left on p440) Anyway 1897 is agood year, so I bought it now
