  1. It's what Americans do to coins, in order to help them measure their personal wealth more accurately Basically it is the process of sealing a coin into a plastic holder (called a slab as a nickname). The holder is marked with the grading company's name, and the grade of the coin according to them. The coin cannot be broken out without damaging the slab. In my experience slabbed non US coins are often graded questionably, from the British slabbed coins I have seen.
  2. What did the MS64 slabbed Halfpenny go for??
  3. I should think a lot of them probably don't know that grades and varieties exist, and are quite sure that '1913 Penny in Good condition' is perfectly thorough!
  4. It's generally not something that is done with British coins, the only grading services are based in America, and to be perfectly honest I don't like the idea of getting a coin officially graded and sealed in a holder. And I think it would be expensive (and risky) to send your coins to America to be sealed in. Different people have different opinions, so post a picture of the coin here in order to gauge an average opinion, or take it to show coin dealers face to face, who will also give you opinions. An opinion from a good coin dealer is just as reliable as a plastic holder.
  5. They sound like fakes to me. George III fakes are very common, I have a whole type set! They are collectable, and no doubt there are some rarer varieties, but it is a shady area that needs more research.
  6. You remember that extremely rare TB BB mule? The seller has written to me to say he has withdrawn it after receiving my email putting him straight. Apparently he was selling it for a friend. Which highlights another ebay problem....It seems that selling things for friends is getting more popular. It's like Chinese whispers by the time things get listed!
  7. I'm not 100% sure with those modern state quarters, but all other US coinage has the allignment you mention (reverse upside down etc) so I would be 99% sure that's a bog standard coin. Allignment questions, when people wonder if they have a rare coin just because it doesn't look like a British modern coin are very common. The subject has been covered in here a couple of time. I really must write something un missable about the subject, so that hopefully people can learn for themselves. (no offence intended Jordan.....By the way, you're not 'The' Jordan are you?? )
  8. It's a 1977 Silver Jubilee Crown with a face value of 25p. It's worth a pound or so if in mint condition....If not, 25p.
  9. Don't encourage people to sell things through eBay! New users to eBay as well as people that don't usually sell coins seldom get the best prices for coins...Least of all Expensive sets like that one. I'll get back later with mintage numbers and Krause valuation, unless someone beats me to it.
  10. And there is a demand for enamelled coins, you can see that by the current bid. And from personal experience I know they sell pretty well. They may technically be ruined as coins, but in doing so, someone has created something else, something even more individual than the coin host.
  11. Already far too many to list!
  12. Well done Chris - you must have friends in high places Oh yes indeed
  13. No don't split the plastic case up! You may get a couple of quid for the unc pennies and half pennies, but I shouldn't think you'll get much for the rest of the modern stuff in less than UNC. Put the 1953 set on as a separate lot, and just get what you can for the rest.
  14. Hmmm, not a bad grade, but both sides look toothed to me. I've told the seller too!
  15. July or August probably. I'll be in the UK some of next month. I'lll be telling Waterstone's and WHSmith etc that the book comes out in October, but that's just for leeway, I do hope to get it done for september.
  16. I've used that one already too!! Do I have our permission HPJ, now that you own it? I have done the Halfpennies 1902-36, but at this stage all the values are just copied out of the 2004 edition. When I've done the book (which will be a copy of the 2004 with colour pictures) I'll check the Rotographic database for prices, assign tasks, and ask you chaps to tell me what you can find.
  17. I already have! But I just have room for the obv at the moment.
  18. Just to annouce that Colin Cooke has given me permission to use his pictures in the next Collectors' Coins book. Fantastic news, because it would have been very difficult to source good enough quality pictures of some coins from my own previously used images. So the printed greyscale version should be great, but the pdf will be fantastic, with zoomable 300dpi full colour images on every page. I'm up to page 19 with the text now, and have probably inserted about 50% of the images up to there.
  19. The thing is, do these people actually seriously wonder why thier 'VF' coins don't sell for actual VF prices?? I bet they must think that Spink coins are well over priced! Thank god they have pictures.
  20. Your being silly! I got one of those the other month, and it was exactly as you describe.
  21. One for you custard1966....This one is not only VF, it also has lustre! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...3913161912&rd=1 I need say no more.
  22. It's worth 5p if you can find a bank to take it in. If in mint condition it may be worth up to £1 or so.
  23. It'll be worth 50p if you can find a bank to take it in. Unless it's in mint condition.
  24. That's much better, I like that.
  25. Ok, well done, you seem to have changed it from your first revision.
