Is there still a demand for bronze pennies?
RChris replied to RChris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
In retrospect it was daft listing it to finish during the WCF.......but when I set it up for a 10 day run I wasn't think about football 😉 It was a rubbish game anyway and if anyone REALLY wanted that coin I'm sure it would have been priority over the footie. That's the advantage of sniping and proxy bidding. You don't have to remember to bid in the last minutes or seconds. Maybe I was correct in my OP.......there isn't the the interest and demand there was 10 years ago. -

Sure you can see the current maximum bid during the auction. But you cannot see the amount someone may have placed as their maximum bid as automatic or proxy bidding. -
you must have great eyesight paddy

1960s heavy flan pennies
Rob replied to absence of uniformity's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There are very few rules in play, only generalities due to the number of variables involved. Most will conform to type, but there is always the exception, hence the need to keep an open mind regarding potential alternative explanations. If an unc coin is determined by wear to the struck relief detail, then it could stay 'unc' for a while until sufficient protection has worn away to affect the die struck detail. That is why practically as struck could be considered aposite, but then, there will never be a consensus, only your own viewpoint. -

Ah, maybe I didn't refresh the screen a short time after it had finished. I turned the phone over almost straight away and went back to the final. -
The coin was purchased by a friend who I sent the link to he did leave a bid and then a really high one with a few seconds left. He obviously paid what collectors thought it was worth, although he has been asking me for one since a similar one sold in the workman sale and would have been happy to pay more. Maybe what one collector wants others don’t.

Really? That's very interesting. Another case for using a sniping service. -

I followed the bidding right up to the end on my phone. There was little activity in the last hour and none at all in the closing seconds, so no one had put a snipe bid in, at least not a higher one. One other piece of eBay advice I have for sellers is to time it so that the auction ends at a sensible time, say afternoon or early evening at the weekend or early evening midweek. Bidders not using a sniping service are likely to be in bed or watching something on TV at 22:37 and less likely to be following the bidding. Especially when there's a World Cup final on... Maybe it's small margins, but it could mean two bidding against each other vs a lone bidder. -

Sorry to disagree, but no, as an eBay seller, you cannot see a buyer's maximum bid amount. eBay's Automatic Bidding keeps the maximum limit hidden from everyone except the buyer and the system itself. Also a seller can't bid on their own auction......but easy enough to ask a friend or relative. - Yesterday

Paddy started following Half Penny 1799: proof or not?
-
I like that there are variations with the 1799. I have 3 - 5 incuse gunports (which seems to be the most common), 7 relief gunports and plain hull. The best is probably this 5 incuse:
-
True! It has a beautiful style and I prefer it to the 1806 type
-
Yes, that's an attractive halfpenny, and a unique type (the first regal halfpenny since 1775, as there wasn't a cartwheel halfpenny in 1797 sadly; then there was a gap until 1806 when a new smaller design was issued). I've always liked that single year type too.

Thank you for your comment, I like it as well, I also find the reliefs and the colour particularly attractive.
