Just A Thought For Newcomers!
Paddy replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That should do you fine. Unlike Pennies, I don't think there are that many single denomination collectors for shillings. By the way, I would extend your range just a little, to the start of the milled shillings in 1662 (barring the very scarce Cromwell issues in the 1650s). Quite a few of the 17th century shillings are fairly reasonably priced and this gives you the opportunity to add a few more monarchs to the run. Shillings from 1696 and 1697 are fairly plentiful, as are some of the Charles II dates in the 1660s to 1680s. -

I do have the 2025 "Coins of England & the United Kingdom" for both pre & decimal. It's a good resource (well, except for pricing 🤣) but wasn't sure that I'd missed something. Thanks! -

I don't know of a book just on shillings - maybe others do? A good starting point would be the usual "Coins of England & the United Kingdom" which comes out every year, but you only need to update occasionally. This is equivalent to the US Red Book. If you want to get more specialised "English Silver Coinage" by Maurice Bull is probably best, but only really necessary if you are going into all the varieties. - Today

Just A Thought For Newcomers!

I started with a few type sets of different monarchs (entertaining sometimes to find in the US) but decided I needed something more to focus my attention on. So I've got a binder set up labeled "Shillings - 1702 to 1970". I know that I will never get them all, and most of what I have is recent Copper/Nickel ones. But I've found a reasonable Lima shilling, a very nice 1816 recoinage example & a couple through Victoria and Edward & the silver Georges. It gives me something to concentrate on and keeps me from spreading my resources too thin. And I'll have fun. So is there a good book on Shillings for this 'Murcan? 😇 -
1937 Edward VIII Shilling - Wow!

Somehow I don't think I'll even leave a space in my "Shillings from 1702 - 1970" binder for that one! 🤣 -
Its come to pass that I keep feeling the need to move on with the pile of really...really worn out hammered coins. Ive tried and cant get beyond thinking this may be Edward I... on the reverse I can make out Civi Tas ..beyond that nothing comes to mind.... Any Ideas?

I thought it worth reviving this one to show another 1698 halfpenny recently acquired. As has been previously mentioned here, these are very difficult to find, particularly in decent grades, having been struck for three months only. It pays to keep one's eyes peeled…

I think that's what the last person had in mind when I sold a kg or so on ebay last time.

Henry VII Penny & Half Penny....Clipped .....1485-1509
Citizen H replied to Citizen H's topic in British Hammered
Ah! errrrmmmm, this was a lash up on my part, 3 hammered coins in need of confirmation, I had an email confirming 2 of the hammered are... (The arched crown is Henry VII, an early issue before the sovereign pennies come in.The other one is possibly Edward IV's Light Cross and Pellets Irish coinage - these have a quatrefoil centre and are virtually always struck on too small flans, so with most or all of the legend missing as here. ) so this related to the lower 2 coins, the 1st coin I had down as a Henry VII Penny, Clipped 1485-1509. Eirestan mentions the mm. Tun so 1493-95 Canterbury... wow... it amazes me that chaos and confusion can be easily resolved...by them in the know....Happily these are now put to rest.....its been a long day. 🙄 -
I put up the coins as I'm sifting through the hammered with my opinion of what it may be (still loads to learn), a coin expert was passing and got to chat and I just asked for a look and confirmation of what I thought it was... in blue was a reply .... so at least I can happily put this coin in the folder with albeit brief confirmation...👍☺️

Blimey, where are you copying and pasting all this blue text from? You’d already identified as much in the OP.

If I get enough, I might put them on ebay as material for an art project. Only the 84s sell individually.

Henry VII Penny & Half Penny....Clipped .....1485-1509
Rob replied to Citizen H's topic in British Hammered
More obviously there is no sign of a quatrefoil on the reverse to make it Irish (or possibly episcopal English). Don't worry about the small flan reference as many coins were clipped, focus on the detail you can see. -
Henry VII Penny & Half Penny....Clipped .....1485-1509
Eirestan replied to Citizen H's topic in British Hammered
The crowns on both look like Henry VII. The larger i assume is a penny. Looks like the Tun mint mark and Canterbury mint. The lower one could be a half penny but i cannot glean much more. The cross ends on the reverse on both coins are definitely Tudor. -
That explains why I am not seeing any in circulation! I no longer do sets or proofs, so it looks like 2024 will remain a blank year for me.

the two coins are as follows..... The arched crown is Henry VII, an early issue before the sovereign pennies come in. If anyone is after some 2024 coins best get in now before prices go crazy (as usual when a coin or set of coins is confirmed NIFC): https://www.royalmint.com/corporate/circulating-coin/uk-currency/mintages/

This is an Edward I penny minted in London. This is identified by the obverse inscription EDWR’ANGL’DNS[HYB] 👍

This was found lurking in with some worn Hammered coins....... Silver 6 Pfennings 1734. Prince Louis Rudolph (Ludwig Rudolf) (1731-1735) Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (German States) apparently quite a rarity 👍

Welcome to the forum. I am no expert on the Gun Money, but it would seem likely that there are many die faults and die fill variations around as they were struck largely on campaign. Even the regal coinage from the 1690s has a huge number of variations.

Is this an error or is it just a die fill ? Reads RFX instead of REX. I can't find it in the Spinks guide or much about it online. I think the month may be the September variant with the stop after Sept and after XII but not 100 % sure of that.
