  2. Sounds good, but we still need photos! Jerry
  3. Thanks, I have been studying all of those images. I have used the main identifier for the obverse shown on Richards site being the R & I that don’t touch. And for the reverse the thinner waist/ trident shaft. ( If you draw a line from the nose of Brittania down to by her waist you can clearly see a wider gap on the no H compared to the heaton coins) then I have used the other identifiers for the P+r to confirm the main two.
  4. You seem to know what you have 👍 These are the other pictured known examples off Richards site to compare. https://rarestpennies.wordpress.com/1882-f112/
  5. I found this interesting and some lovely hammered coins pictured: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm2yerrqel7o
  6. Hi, thanks ! yes, Including the tooth in line with the (1)882 14 teeth yes. The 1883 obverse from what I have seen shows the hair ribbon terminating in a point to the knot unlike the 1882 no H. Also the 1883 doesnt have the tuft of hair which is shown on all the examples, worn coins show this. I have read about worn or altered F111 (P+p), F114 (R+p),F115 (R+r) none of those pairings have the identifiers F112 (Gouby (P+r); Freeman 11+N)
  7. Yes, there is no substitute for pictures of the actual coin.
  8. One thing that stands out is the date width as should be 14 Teeth ( NOT 13 ) and also the possibility of the last digit being altered from a 3. Maybe post clear pictures as there is a lot more knowledgeable collectors on here than me and will be able to give there opinion.

  10. Hi all, I have two sets of gold sovereigns that I’m looking to sell and I’m after some expert opinions: the two sets: 1989 Proof Gold Sovereign 4 Coin Set 500th Anniversary Boxed & 1987 Proof Gold Sovereign 3 Coin Set Boxed - how much I should be looking for each set? - best place to sell? - should I keep hold of them with the price of gold at the bottom? TIA
  11. Hi I have just joined the forum because I would like to ask a question concerning the 1882 No H penny. If a coin has all the details below and no Heaton mint mark is it certain to be a London minted coin? Obverse: - R & I don’t touch. - the tuft of hair which is not on the Heaton minted examples. - The hair ribbon which does not terminate in a point like the heaton coins. - Victoria has a hooked nose compared to the straighter bridge of the nose displayed on the Heaton coins. Reverse: - 186 border teeth with 13 teeth between 1 and 2. - thinner waist/ trident shaft. many thanks in advance.
  12. Someone has took a genuine 1820 coin and altered it to 1817 then cast it i assume. Anyway....I found the paper's that Gary Oddie wrote if anyone is interested. They are all on the link here...https://britnumsoc.blog/2021/10/09/counterfeit-shillings-of-george-iii-1816-1820-iv-a-contemporary-mould-revisited-gary-oddie/
  13. I assume there must be a known genuine die of this overdate? Must be cast surely. Then again that makes no sense. Why overdate it with an older date. Very odd. I wonder if the word got out that 1820 shillings where being counterfeited thus giving extra scrutiny to coins with that date so the forger altered the date to take some of the scrutiny away 🤔
  14. Sad news about Gary. I never met him but heard lots of good things about him. He was born in the town i reside in. I just dug my shilling out as this post had sparked my interest. Never even noticed it before but it's got a clear overdate. 1817 over 1820. That's something i have never seen in a counterfeit coin before.
  15. Yes, Gary Oddie passed away quite recently. @seuk is Peter Poulsen. Most of his website text has been archived, but unfortunately none of the images: web.archive.org/web/20150825194438/http://www.steppeulvene.com/index.george_iii.html I hope he's alright.
  16. Just found an obituary for him i think so that's a no go on any further research. Passed away last February.
  17. Gary Oddie has written a few papers about them. He was doing a study of them. Not sure if he still is but his old paper's should still be online somewhere.
  18. It maybe - I am not sure I would know how to find out. The link I have is this: http://www.steppeulvene.com/index.george_iii.html Based on the similarities I suspect this may have been @seuk's site.
  19. I think I remember that. Is it on the wayback machine/internet archive?
  20. This one definitely looks brass with a silver wash, given its state I decided a clean wasn't going to harm its value too much!
  21. There was a website for these, which I have bookmarked, but when I tried to visit it just now I think it has been deleted.
  22. @seuk used to specialise in these, and had quite a collection I believe. If my memory serves me correctly, he either had, or was putting together, a book and/or website?
  23. Yes i agree it has to be spurious. The dates not lined up properly and the G & R in Geor are out of proportion with the other letters. I have a contemporary forgery silver washed brass shilling dated 1817.

  25. Welcome to the forum Jill. Thats a really nice find. Don't often see that sub class turn up. Congratulations !
  26. Personally I'd lay the coin on the (transparent) ruler on the coin with the zero point at the coin's widest point. I'd also use the mm scale rather than inches.
  27. wow! 😲 what a find... well done you.👍
