DaveG38 Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Agree completely with your Post Dave, of course not everything is obtainable in EF for a decent price, i should have said the more common coins. If you continue down that route the 1905 silver will be a Little sore on the Pocket in EF As will 1850 and 54 shillings etcFor me, I recognised that I would never be able to have a completely high grade and extensive collection (unless the National Lottery comes up - some chance!), so I've compromised where I have to, upgraded when I can, and accepted the coins I have may have to be the best I can afford. Taking the 1850 and 54 shillings, I have an example of both. The 54 came from the US and is in only fair condition, but only cost about $5, whilst the 1850 which is GF did cost about £150.00, but when I see one only slightly better than mine going for £2k in an LCA auction, I reckon its a case of accepting mine as it is. To upgrade to even GVF would probably cost many thousands, and to be honest I'd rather spend that sort of money on something older and much more interesting - after all the 1850 is just another bog-standard viccy shilling apart from its date (with due apologies to all the shilling specialists). DaveG38 Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Wish I had kept mineNot bad at all. A bit better than mine on the obverse, whereas my reverse is I think a little better. What do you reckon to get for that now? Quote
DaveG38 Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 I paid 1300 euros for it and got £2kSo, pretty much doubled your money. Can't be bad, although I guess it's price today would be even higher than £2k. Quote

It was another bought at the time of being unemployed, i knew it was rare and the Price was good and there was still Money in it so the Credit Card took a beating that day Quote

One of my best was a 1689 farthing, a little corroded, but basically VF with a small chip out of it. The seller was asking £100, so I took his arm off, having paid £500 to Colin Cooke for my existing one in Fine. Quote
Nonmortuus Posted August 16, 2015 Author Posted August 16, 2015 So I decided to try and see if I could get a better 1887 Shilling that I already had. This was my original shilling:This is my 'upgrade' 1 Quote
Nonmortuus Posted August 16, 2015 Author Posted August 16, 2015 Forgot to add... hopefully the newest one is a higher grade not just in my eyes? Quote
Paulus Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Looks like the coin sold on eBay this evening for £10.50 delivered Yes, much better Quote
Nonmortuus Posted August 16, 2015 Author Posted August 16, 2015 It is Paulus but I know the seller via facebook, they are both off him Quote
Paulus Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Yes, the seller's fine, I have bought from him plenty of times. Always nice coins available on eBay on Sundays, I have hoovered up a couple myself today Quote
Nonmortuus Posted August 16, 2015 Author Posted August 16, 2015 Yeah Mick has been great with all my orders so far Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 I gave my eldest daughter a couple of grands worth of coins to sell on ebay to help her fund her forthcoming US holiday. We went through them and I helped her with descriptions.Told her not to sell on Sunday evening as you can get shafted. Quote

Some sellers even list their coins to finish within less than a minute of each other, that's just plain silly.I like late Sunday evening as a seller though, especially just after many people's payday. When have you advised her to schedule her listings to end out of interest, and can you post a link in case we are interested in any of the items? Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Paul I told her to list to finish Thursday evening listing on Monday night with 10 days.We used to list coins for sale under Jakebake78 but she now has a new user name.My mainly buying ID is Kinschicken.....don't ask it is a long story. Quote
Coinery Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 It'll be the lustre on your new coin that will sing out to you! I love great lustre! Quote
Nonmortuus Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 I just had a 1844 Half penny land on my desk, I believe it is EF or at the worst gVF. These are the sellers pics not mine. Quote

Nonmortuus Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 I picked it up for £42 delivered which doesnt seem too bad against the SPINK pricing for EF....I have also been offered the following:I know that 1917 is a lower mintage than other dates around it. I can see the rim knock at 5pm on the Obverse, that aside it looks a clean coin to me. Can I have others opinions please? I think Spink have this at £160 unc and Rotographic at £75. What do you feel would be a fair price? The dealer has asked for £80.ThanksNon Quote
Paulus Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I wouldn't buy that 1917 shilling personally, the rim knock and the degree of wear completely put me off. It is EF for wear at best for me, looking at the flatness of the lion's face and elsewhere.A fair price? Possibly £25. Quote
Nonmortuus Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 Hi Paulus, it's a sixpence with a mintage of 7,725,475. I think the 1917 shilling was 22,202,608. Does that impact on your opinion at all? Quote
Paulus Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Sorry NM, I didn't even notice the denomination!Yes, the 6d is much scarcer for 1917, although 7.7 million is still quite a few!Perhaps I would be prepared to pay £50 for it if I wanted one, the EK reducing the value by perhaps £20-£30 for me. But I would rather pay more for one without the EK! Quote
Nonmortuus Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 Cheers Paulus, I said I was going to check with you guys before I decided what to do. Quote
