Well it's raised more questions than it has answered.. There's something there but it's too worn to see if it's just a chip, strange for it to be so central though. Could there be a possibility that they filled the die number in and in became unclogged or even it becoming clogged over time? In any case, the 3 is what's making it so difficult to assign.

Suggestions?

I'm ignoring the mark in the middle, even if it is a die number no-one is going to be able to say what it is so it might as well not be there. I just can't find a reverse die with the same 3.

Well.......it might be a worn down die number. But more likely it's just a smudge of some sort. Very difficult to know. f it is a die No, what a shame it's worn down.

Of course, they're as rare as hen's teeth, and you hardly ever see them for sale, even at the top auctions. Alfnail had a worn one up on e bay for £995 ( think Die No 4), but he withdrew and sold to a previous client.

One of my biggest wants, an 1863 die No - not fussy as to which, or condition of specimen.

I sent a couple of pictures to Michael (Gouby) and asked for his two cents;

I regret to say that you have a totally normal 1863 – no variety, just slightly wider spacing.
If you read at the bottom of my last book on page 28 I say.

“This edition will list all of the date widths that I have found from 1866. I have omitted the 1860 to 1863 period, as the variations are extensive and range from the very narrow to the well spaced. The disregard for consistency in date width in those early years could possibly be due to the fact that James Watt struck most of the pennies between 1861 and 1863.”

So there you have it :rolleyes:

It would have been a massive shame for sure, and after researching more about them to try and assign my coin I can absolutely confirm what you're saying, very very hard to find examples to compare to. Alfnail always has something for sale that's worth drooling over haha :P

Nice for him to reply so quickly and give you an answer Matt.

He's that type of guy, Pete. Responded to me within a few hours over a query I had about my F69, a year or so back.

Top bloke.

If you remember from the other thread too, he also signed his Gouby book for me before he shipped it!

The F114 1882H; there isn't a close-up on the CGS site. Seems a scarce coin to me, first I've come across for sale (at least that I've recognised, probably couldn't tell in many pics).

I was really pleased with these, especially the 1878 which is beautiful.

Yes, some absolute gems there - especially impressed with the 1875H and the 1878.
