Tomo73 Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Good evening, I've been given this coin from a customer who 4 years ago unblocked a drainage trench near where we live.( St Fagans castle) Cardiff . Due to his wise curiosity checked every spadeful of mud that emerged and out popped this coin. I've checked Colin cookes website and I've managed to make out that it's :year could be 1698, Weighs 9.31gCan see a full stop after the(S')Obverse reads - GVLIELMVS TERTIVS'Reverse-corroded but BRITAN ?NIA is possible to make out.Year 10% what I see is 1698 not sure. Could any body shed some light on which variety it is there are so many 1698-1699. Quote
scott Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 1698 date in Exerguethere are not that many for that date. pretty scarce type. Quote
Tomo73 Posted November 21, 2014 Author Posted November 21, 2014 Thanks peckris, hi Scott, what's your thoughts on the coin , it doesn't fit into my collection at all.Was intrested in any info you could share about it.I know that st Fagans castle was built late 1580s.Will have to look up "exerge"Bryan Quote
Rob Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 They were only struck for the first 3 months of 1698, as there was a glut of halfpence and farthings in certain parts of the country. An Act of Parliament to stop coining being passed on 12th May 1698 and effective from the 24th June. This explains the relative rarity of the 1698 1/2d. Quote
Tomo73 Posted November 21, 2014 Author Posted November 21, 2014 Exergue " a space on a coin, token, or medal usually on the reverse below the central part of the design" ...Got it..Thanks rob . Where Would I find that information to read up on it? Quote
Peter Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Exergue is the date under BritanniaThere is also a type with the date in the legend. Quote
Rob Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 (edited) Peck. Otherwise known as English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in the British Museum 1558-1958, p167.Not cheap, but essential reading for any serious copper collector. Colin G. Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Very generous Garrett, there really is a great bunch of folks on this forum. On the subject of the farthing it is a difficult variety, but as pointed out the damage would massively detract. I agree you are probably talking gap filler and £10's of pounds would be more appropriate. Quote
