dave-lowe Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 This Elizabeth I Sixpence reads "IVORE", and it appears that someone has tried to insert the missing T. It certainly looks like there is the base of a T, and a trace of the top stroke. The coin has a rather blotchy tone, but it is the larger flan variety. We know that errors on hammered coins aren't regarded as important, but they are still very interesting. Quote
Coinery Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Hi Dave,I'd say that was just a striking error, you can see a level of rotation at the 9 O'clock leaf, and the inner beads in the same quarter! Quote
azda Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 You mean blatant errors such as this but unrecorded? Quote
Coinery Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 You mean blatant errors such as this but unrecorded?I'd love to one day extend the work by BCW to include legend errors and, as I've mentioned before, perhaps even a die-study! You just can't have a job at the same time, unfortunately! Wouldn't that be a great way to while away a life? Quote

azda Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Not quite aure, but does the V in POSVI also look like an A? Quote
Coinery Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Someone definitely mislaid/mistook or broke the V punch! This is one of the earliest of the beaded Lis reverses, it would be interesting to see whether it was a one off die, or whether others were made? That's where a die-study would be an amazing thing to have access to!
