copper123 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Why not give it a miss if you think its been dipped or cleaned. There are hundreds for sale on ebay that have not been cleaned or diped.simples Quote

(the dark round the lettering)Also what grade do you think?Thank you allIt doesn't look dipped or cleaned, and I'd give it GEF as a grade. But there is minor scuffing/scratching on obverse, and as said, there are better examples around. However, if the price is right...(It would be appreciated if you posted pictures rather than Word documents - I have frequent problems with Word and none of its substitutes would open it. Images, however, I have more options to open with than you could shake a stick at.) Quote
sweep Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 I would love to not used word documents but the post link never works. It wont let me click OK. Quote

pies Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Derek has one on his site http://pennycrowncoins.co.uk/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=1747&=SID Quote
sweep Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Thanks Pies! But would you say that the first one I looked at (word document one) was OK too? Quote
pies Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Trust me my coin grading is shocking so i wont guess .I've never had a problem with Dereks coinsthis is the coin you were looking athttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1937-CROWN-GEORGE-VI-BRITISH-SILVER-COIN-V-NICE-/380870790363?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item58adab0cdb Quote
sweep Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Yes pies it was that one. It looks so nice with no wear that I can see. Quote
Paulus Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Little to no wear but the obverse has digs in the field at 4 o/c and marks on the King's cheek Quote
Coinery Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Nice eBay photo, sweep, but there are better out there! It's worth getting a coin like this spot on, don't settle for anything less than perfect! Quote
sweep Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 The scratch at 4 o'clock wont mess with the grading too much will it?It doesn't matter I bought it - my first crown from my favourite year! Quote
Paulus Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I agree with Stuart, in fact pretty much all G6 silver is reasonably affordable in as struck BU with a little patience (depending on one's budget of course!) Quote
sweep Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 The most important thing I like to think is whether you like it not other people and I like this one.But I still hope the scratch wont devalue it too much if at all. Quote
sweep Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 The reason I bought this one is that on other crowns above the cross on the crown there a 3 dots, on all I saw they were worn but on this one they wont which suggests it had no wear. Quote
Coinery Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 The most important thing I like to think is whether you like it not other people and I like this one.But I still hope the scratch wont devalue it too much if at all. It's 100% about whether you like it yourself, sweep, totally agree! The scratches/digs will affect its appeal to others so, consequently, the value, unfortunately!Marks don't really affect grade, at least not in the true sense, though grading companies include such things in their numeric assessment, and subsequently grade the coin having included them! You could take a coin straight from the press with a hole dug in the queen's cheek by the unfortunate fall of another coin...technically and correctly called UNC, however, CGS won't see it that way! 1 Quote
sweep Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 I will take it to the states and get it graded there, maybe they will be a bit more lenient! Quote
Rob Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I will take it to the states and get it graded there, maybe they will be a bit more lenient! Why bother? Just learn to grade properly such that you can do it without feeling you have to pay to gain an opinion on grade. I haven't seen your coin but I will give it genuine, with a little bit of wear - That will be ten pounds please. If you want a number on it, that will be another tenner. Thanks. If you want the slabs for protection there are some that can easily be opened, or you can put them in capsules. Quote
Peter Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 The cost of grading will be more than the coin is worth.GEF send me your cheque. Quote
copper123 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 i bought a nicer a/unc for the same price on ebay It did take a few weeks till a nice enough one came alomg - but it did eventually Quote
Peckris Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I like the 1937 crown, but being a type collector am content with having the proof set example, rather than a separate non-proof. Quote
