Blimey, these 1599 Anchor Sixpences go well, I watched one go through last week! Of course they're rare, and you don't see them on eBay very often, but I just couldn't part with that much money for a coin that looks like either of these, EVEN with an I Brown provenance (I would like at least ONE of his 'decent' coins, though!).

You never see them and then, like buses, 2 come along at once!

Not surprised. Anchor in E1 is one of those marks you automatically buy when they come along. The grotty one above has a muled round and pointed anchor marks too, which is probably why it got where it did.

To be honest with you I didn't pick up on the marks, I was really struggling with the grotty silver bit that was proximal to it! :)

Definitely one for sunglasses but, hey, what a price, around 8 X the price of the regular dates!

Makes you wonder what a pretty VF would fetch?

Less than it should probably because most buyers would get a twitchy bottom. The prices at the bottom end are probably inflated relatively because they are in short supply whatever the condition - hence a lot of dosh for not a lot of eye appeal or quality. But at least are affordable for the masses.

Interestingly I have just bought one in purely by coincidence!! 1599/8 mm Anchor with curved flukes (double anchor on reverse) it is GVF and Ex R. Shuttlewood Lot 423 (part of) The original Colin Cooke described it back in 2002 - "must be one of the finest examples extant for this extremely rare coin"

Might need to reassess my asking price in light of what these have gone for!!!

No, generally they go pretty cheaply, I think that's just eBay for you! ;)

I can't see it on the site?

Edit: What WAS the asking price? :)

Ha I will have to put it on ebay then ;-) No I have literally just bought it so it isn't on a list or website yet..............................Colin sold it for £400 in 2002!! I would be open to offers ;-)

He canna afford it, he keeps telling us he's skint, unless he has Scottish blood in him

Ok, atached should be the picture, it is not a good one just a quick black and white scan, the chap who does our photograpghy is not in today, but you can at least get an idea of what the coin is like!!! Strictly speaking it is perhaps more VF than GVFpost-8049-0-36711000-1380544524_thumb.jp

I reckon Stuart would pawn his boat for a decent rare Liz. :)

The common type's are hard enough to get a defined obverse.

Neil, I can assure you that Stuart (Coinery) is absolutely GAGGING to see a picture of this coin!!!

You know me so well, Paulus! :D

Totally brassic, but with a name like Stuart, and a middle name Bruce, there must be a little Scottish in there somewhere! I did wear a thistle and rose button hole for my wedding, and my best man wore a kilt! We drank whiskey from a curraich (think that's the spelling?), and broke unleavened bread over the wife's head! ;)

Thanks, Neil, a nice example, but suffering with that later period edge! It seems a common trait for 1601 sixpences too!

No disrespects meant but, whilst it has a quality bust, the overall appearance is not pretty, which I know is asking a whole lot of a genuine rarity!

I've got my eye on 2 shillings at the moment (one in the upcoming W&W)! I/we are very VERY much skint at the moment, but would happily put a £200 6-month retainer on it if the price was right, just until we get the boat sorted out! :)

Is that £200 a month for 6 months???

No, sadly not, but I will keep an eye out for it on the website! Who knows when things might change? :)

Thanks for sharing it, though, I haven't seen better it's fair to say!

As a matter of just seeing what 1599 quality's out there, I couldn't find much! There were these two 2006 coins at £220 and £100 http://www.mcsearch.info/search.html?search=&view_mode=0&c=39&a=672&l=&page=12

And this one which I've emailed about, hoping to get some feedback...

Not quite as much fun as buying, but helps soothe the pain a little bit! :)
