I have been offered a Charles I contemporary forgery of a halfcrown in silver from false dies on a lozenge shape flan. It is the ex Colin Adams piece lot 250.

It is also ex H Webb, ex montagu, ex Lockett, ex brooker and ex selig.

Does anyone have any idea what this would be worth?? Think in 2005 it sold for £800. Any help would be gratefully appreciated!!

It is a very difficult one to put a value on.

The provenance adds to the price but ultimately it isn't a genuine coin.

The 2 markets are the civil war or forgery collectors, with the possible inclusion of halfcrown collectors (although I would want a genuine piece rather than a forgery in my box).

The Adams price is probably near the mark at todays level due to the fact that named collections always sell at a premium over anonymous pieces.

Question is; How much do you want it?

Quite agree, it is a specialist piece!!! It has been offered to me at 1200 and didn't know whether that was a good price or not

Unfortunately i don't see the sense in buying a fake at an inflated price because its been in Mr Xs collection. There are other similar fakes out there which have'nt been in a named collection that could probably be picked up for way less. Why pay for a name and a fake

I am not interested in collecting fakes, but I would imagine that those that are, are interested in provenance, as in the authenticity of the contemporary status of the forgery?? It does baffle me why modern replicas sometimes fetch so much ...

I'M interested in buying/seeing/hearing about modern fakes and contemporary counterfeits of the Tudor period, especially Elizabeth, of course!

Ironically, one of the great things about buying and taking an interest in fakes, is that you don't end up buying fakes (mostly)!

So, I'm interested in seeing ALL Tudor fakes, so I can scare myself with what quality is about, but would buy any Elizabeth fakes/counterfeits that I haven't got or already know about.

Seuk has been tipping me off about those that he spots (many thanks, I did win those 2 lots incidentally), so any other eyes and tip-offs would always be appreciated!

One of my regrets in life is handing back to W&W the best counterfeit groat I've seen, in exchange for £50 off a lot price...what was I thinking!

On the other hand, if you bought fake fakes from China, you could be assured of genuine coins? :P

You shouldn't joke, Peck...what will happen to us all when the Chinese buy a coin from the UK to cast the latest mould for a new fake!

Edit: which of course was a fake to begin with!

:D (Though you're quite right - I shouldn't joke...)
