tracyaw Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 According to Spink's book, this variety has a top dot colon flaw after D at the end of the legend. I wonder why he makes this obversation when the flaw is also found on Obverse 2? As varieties can get very complicated I am sure it should be noted (or not noted at all) as the flaw is present in both varieties, and not present in both varieties.I think I shall trust to Freeman from now on, and have just ordered his book. declanwmagee Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 One word, Tracey, for detail in this area....Gouby. Quote

tracyaw Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 Thanks Guys. Shall purchase a Gouby too Quote
RLC35 Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Thanks Guys. Shall purchase a Gouby too Tracyaw, If you like Victorian Pennies, the Gouby book is a must. It is the most recent, and the most complete on Victorian varieties! Quote
Coinery Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Also, if you're just interested in collecting the F numbers, you can use Gouby for supporting evidence! Much as Groom's book, apart from being a tome in its own right, is widely used as a modern updated supporting text for efficiently identifying the Davies and ESC AND F numbers of the 20thC! Quote
tracyaw Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 I do use Michael's site quite a bit, because of the Gouby X's and other up to date info. I should have got his books ages ago. Thanks Quote
Bronze & Copper Collector Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Freeman is the definitive work for the Bronze series of Farthings through pennies, although incomplete due to many new discoveries made since its publication...Gouby, for the Bronze pennies, is the most up to date and complete work available for the specialist collector....I use both in conjunction with each other Quote
tracyaw Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 At the moment I am relying on Chris Henry Perkins, Collecters' Coins GB, which I find excellent, and also David J Groom for 20th century varieties. But I do believe Freeman and Gouby are must buys especially for Bun head pennies which I collect. Quote

But if you thought that you might expand into halfpennies and/or farthings, you should get Freeman as well.Groom is excellent post-1901, and CCBG is useful as a guide to the comparative rarity of many varieties as it gives prices for them. Gary Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 and if you really want to dip into varieties of bun pennies 1860-1865 then try and get a copy of John Jerrams...... Quote
