I think the estimate is pretty close. Especially since it looks to have been chemically dipped! Still a nice example.

Their grade is the usual conservative one - most people wouldn't hesitate at classifying that as EF minimum. And as they say, it has good eye appeal, so I'd say it was about right myself. If you got it for the lower estimate you'd have a bargain IMO.

I Sold a better one last year for half that figure to a forum member

I think I am getting better at spotting dipped/polished/cleaned silver, but what suggests that this penny is 'chemically dipped' ? I would be interested to know the tell-tale signs ...

Paulus,

To me it has a pink/ bluish cast...not a normal shading for Bronze. The pinkish/bluish shading usually means a quick dip in Silver/Copper dip! With that said, sometime camera settings can give you a errounous (sp) coloring. Just MHO.....

Thanks, I must say I wouldn't want to spend a grand on a coin that had been tampered with in any way, especially a 'star' coin like Pies is after, I just wouldn't feel quite the same about it

What about if it is the only available example?

Good question, so far I haven't dealt in such rarities being a very broad type collector, any varieties have come to me kind of accidentally - I guess if I wanted a particular type/date that very rarely became available I would have to consider whatever came on the market, even if (inevitably) less than perfect in many ways.

And of course even with my broad focus on milled ESC types, what will I do if offered a 1798 D&M shilling that has a dubious past? I don't know!!

i'm guessing as these people take photos of coins on a hourly basis (my guess) their set up will be spot on :)

Don't believe it. The pictures may be sharp, even, well exposed, etc, and the set up absolutely perfect, but none of that guarantees an understanding of how to set White Balance.

100% agreed! White Balance is undeniably the Black Art of coin photography!

I do mean to get to the bottom of it one day!
