I look at the orb beneath the cross pattee on the reverse. The wear on the horizontal line across the orb often indicates wear of the coin. No wear is EF plus. Try it.

I see your point, but the orb can let you down a lot on many strikes. I guess the question would be how on earth do you squeeze VF, GVF, NEF, EF, and GEF between Paulus's shilling and your image?

I'm going to have to get you to do my shopping in the Autumn! I'm still on GVF myself, though!

Not a HC but a 1658 Cromwell shilling, which 'Uncle Buck' (Coinery's nickname for Bucks Coins) is selling as EF but I would grade as nVF

He always overgrades, generally by 1/2 to 1 full grade, depends on what he's paid for the coin

It's not an exact science just one of a number of things to look for. For oz coins pre 1936 we use the 8 pearls on kings crown in a similar way.

Its a pity some of your Australian auction houses don't use the same exact science when grading their lots

That's GVF for me! I'd be really interested in a number of views, as these Cromwell coins, which I think are a stunning series, are meeting with quite some variability!

Edit: possibly even a smidging better than GVF, I really like it. You've always got to mark Uncle Buck's coins down a notch on eye-appeal, as his images always look very 'lustry' and colourful, whereas, in-hand, the story is mostly very different!

I'd agree - certainly minimum VF but probably better.

I agree (re the grade that is). The laurel leaves show only a small amount of wear but I wouldn't push it as far as EF.

The problem with extremely conservative grading is that it pulls the entire grading system upwards and creates great chasms in the lesser grades. This has to come out somewhere and you may well end up with a 'fine' or whatever that covers three-quarters of the coins available!

Don't think we ever got to the bottom of that did we? Some guy came on here and accused him of all sorts of stuff then got huffy when we took it with a pinch of salt. I do know Chris from auctions, coin fairs and the like and find this all hard to believe as he comes across as a perfectly reasonable guy, and the few professional dealings I have had with him have gone off without a hitch, although to be fair they were very few.

Conviction or not, I would judge him purely on his coin dealing activities and reputation. Whatever else he has done, however unpleasant, has nothing to do with that IMO.
