Edward VI Crown

I'm trying to find out the relative rarity of the 1551-53 Edward VI Crowns. Coin crafts 1999 standard Catalogue for example says that a 1551 Crown tun mintmark is extremely rare. True? Also I keep seeing references to Lingfords 1950 sale that list the varieties of theses beautiful crowns and presumably the relative rarities of each.. Any help?

The Lingford catalogue doesn't list the relative rarities of the dies, but Tun is a very rare mark for 1551 because it only appears on obverse Z. The vast majority dated 1551 are obverse A with a few other dies appearing - B, C, E, F, G, J & K. all of these are relatively rare. 1552 & 1553 have 2 dies per year. It's a need to get catalogue for reference purposes.

Yes it's mine. I used to have a really big australian coin collection starting from the ripe old age of 12. Then over 35 years moved to really really old australian coins- namely english coins. Love the monarchs. The collection has now gone from 200 to about 20 coins. So quality improved somewhat.

A great move, obviously, looking forward to more of that! Are you an Australian and living there? Always amazed at the breadth of this forum!

Incidentely, presuming you are an Australian, is that a common and happy pastime down under, to collect the older English coins, or do most there stay G3 and younger? Or do most just stick with the homegrown material? I know I've sent nearly as many to Aus, as US and Canada, so there's obviously a healthy base of collectors out there!

Aussie born, bred, and love it here.beautiful wife family of 3 littlies. Biggest market by far here I'd say is australian coins. GB only minor, but seems to be gaining interest mostly through Noble. For me I got a bit tired of halfpennies, pennies florins..that all looked the same..and was drawn to the brilliant and diverse english world. From celtic to George V and everything in between.

This is what you are asking for.

Personally, I would use the Nightingale sale catalogue which also has this list, but with an extra added. I have also found a previously unlisted reverse die paired with obv.G, but that assumes the lists don't contain a misprunt and that I have not missed a blocked die. I haven't had time to confirm this..

It is in focus. I rested it on the scanner bed. i.e. I can't do better.
