pies Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Hi all this is my first forray into hammered coins and am probably way out on grading this coin. I bought the coin because i quite like the bust and its a bit of a change to the Edward Vii stuff ive been buying latelyIm grading it as "fine" am i in the right ball park ? Quote
Rob Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 As for grade, fine to good fine is ok, but I'd be a bit worried about the pitting. It's either been dug up from fairly corrosive soil or it's a cast. How much does it weigh, where did it come from and how much did it cost? Quote
pies Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 Hi Rob its a metal detector find from yorkshire (ebay) cost £117 weight 2.35g Quote
Rob Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Hi Rob its a metal detector find from yorkshire (ebay) cost £117 weight 2.35g I suggest it's not a detector find, but a copy. A sixpence should weigh 3g. Please PM me the seller. Thanks. Quote
pies Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 Rob i cant send you a PM the system says you cant receive them Quote

Don't ask me how to get it back as I haven't a clue. There is a send an email link below. Try that. Quote

pies Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 Mmm a bit too round apart frombeing very very round, its almost perfectsome pitting, well quite a bit actuallya hint of draw file marks on the edgebeing very very flatapart from all that it looks genuine :D :D :D Quote
Mongo Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Sincerely hope your coin turns out to be ok pies! Quote
Coinery Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I'd definitely say good fine but, to exaggerate the point, imagine a full'ish' flan shilling at 4.7g...you wouldn't touch it with a barge pole! The pitting wouldn't have necessarily put me off, I have to say, but the weight would have me running away at a million miles an hour! If you paid by PayPal, and I would never pay by any other means on eBay ( unless I either knew the seller, or was convinced of the piece beyond doubt), then you should be OK to get your money back (if that's where this is headed)! TomGoodheart Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Mmm a bit too round I don't think it's the roundness that's a problem! Perhaps people are missing that this isn't actually a hammered coin after all, but an early machine made coin produced by Nicholas Briot. Second milled issue (1638-39, Spink 2860) Typically they are very round being made from specially prepared blanks and very rarely found clipped. Here's a similar example that sold through Baldwins 18 months ago:What concerns me, like Rob, is the rather odd 'frothiness' to the worn areas. That doesn't look like the adjustment marks caused by a file (which is typically what was used). Nor does it really look as I'd expect if it's silver. Coupled with the low weight, I too am ... unsure about it. Quote
Mongo Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Did you get any clarification on the coin yet pies? Quote

Rob Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 For what it's worth, the s.g. was 7.82 approx., so probably mostly tin with a bit of added lead. That's the usual mix as lead is normally the main impurity. Quote

I'm just in the process of backing everything up onto an online server, and have been going through all my images to reduce the folder sizes! Here's something I had a number of years ago (at least 5, as I can't find any records to go with it, no weight, origin or, unfortunately, what happened to the coin)! Quote
