Debbie Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Hi all. I saw this which looked interesting and wondered if anyone could explain what it meant by H/H Q/Q stops in both O'S ? I can see one H which looks like the cross bar could be missing and the two Q's look a bit different but other than that...."unrecorded shilling" Quote
TomGoodheart Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Hi all. I saw this which looked interesting and wondered if anyone could explain what it meant by H/H Q/Q stops in both O'S ? I can see one H which looks like the cross bar could be missing and the two Q's look a bit different but other than that...."unrecorded shilling"I can't see what is meant by the Q/Q myself. The N of PENSE could be double struck. The most curious thing is the dots in the Os of HONI and SOIT. Beyond that,it othewise looks OK to me. It's one for the milled silver chaps like seuk to say different I'm afraid .. Quote
Accumulator Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 I'll leave further explanation to one of the silver collectors but I can vouch for the seller, having dealt with them before and been very happy. Quote
argentumandcoins Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 H over H and Q over Q in the garter legend, where there are also 2 stops inside the O's.The 2 re-punched letters are neither here nor there but the 2 stops (if they are stops and not die faults are slightly interesting) Quote
TomGoodheart Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 It'll be interesting to see how much (or if) it sells for. I just can't get terribly excited about such things myself and as Rob or someone mentioned a while back, until a variety is generally recognised as such and appears in Spink et al, it's difficult to say how much it should or could be worth.I suppose that's why I prefer coins that are all individual such as hammered or early milled, or unique such as Debbie's engraved coins. I find it hard at times to distinguish between a variety in milled coinage from an oddity due to die damage or an error. For me, eye appeal is a good basis for comparing one coin with another. When there are several which are much of a muchness I start to lose interest I'm afraid! Quote
seuk Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 The double Q is fairly common and seems to be a matrix variation hence will be found on several dies. The variation with the added dots is likely from an individual die - I've not seen it in hand but I think there has been one or two on ebay over the last year. Debbie Posted April 15, 2012 Author Posted April 15, 2012 Thanks for the info chaps. I will probably watch this out of interest, however I have my eye on some rather more alluring engraved coins... Quote
azda Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 A seller will obviously like to add his own litte piece to a coin in order to add value Quote
seuk Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Just received this not so nice copy - cost me £18+shipping which is 2 or 3 times normal price for a fair/fine example so someone else knew about it...Beside the dots in the O's the die also has a double dot between Y and PENSE...and talking about 1820 shillings - this may be of interest to you Debbie Quote
Debbie Posted May 8, 2012 Author Posted May 8, 2012 Oooo thanks Seuk, hadn't seen that one! So do you think the double dots is a real variety then? So could be of interest to someone who wants a genuine coin ( and can afford it! ) Quote
seuk Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Oooo thanks Seuk, hadn't seen that one! So do you think the double dots is a real variety then? So could be of interest to someone who wants a genuine coin ( and can afford it! )Yes - clearly a separate die variation. And a strange one too. A double letter like the Q or the double dot in right side of garter is easily explained as an attempt to strengthen weakly engraved parts of the design. But to place a dot inside the O's seems out of place - More like a secret mark or someone who didn't knew what he was doing Quote

You may be right.Prices are normally better on ebay.uk - however it also appears on ebay.uk (at $0.10 extra cost) - I'm simply stuck with Canadian ebay. If I try to list on an European ebay site they want me to register as a professional seller since I've sold more than a certain amount - so much for private property I would much prefer to list on ebay.uk as I would be able to sell my duplicate contemporary counterfeits for what they are - Now I have to call them all kinds of silly things like non-regal or tokens. Which means that they have become more difficult to sell Quote
azda Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Seuk, just register another eBay name, simples....... Quote
seuk Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Seuk, just register another eBay name, simples....... Thanks I never imagined that it was possible to avoid the selling limits just by making another user id (I must learn never to use logic in relation to ebay )Now I've listed the first coin...and if I'm lucky perhaps in a years time I'll be alowed to open a ebayshop. Trees don't grow to the sky... Quote
