Well, the good news is that I received some money to use towards coins!

Not so good news .. I'm going to have to use it to pay Wifey, who I still owe for my last purchase!

No coins for me this Christmas, but given it came early on a few occasions during December and is likely to do so again in the new year, I mustn't complain. Potentially far more valuable were the accrued brownie points from Mrs Rob's birthday present.

No coins for me, but LOTS of books on the subject! That " Splendid Shilling" is an intersting read Tom - a good one for spouting of nuggets of shilling related facts and trivia around the dinner table...

Rob - I gave my hubby a homemade "voucher" entitling the holder to spend a "modest" amount of money on "percieved useful tech" read into that what you will. We have just come back from Currys with a Freeview HD recorder, three XBox games and a Kindle.... perhaps I will consider a three figure sum for a coin after all!

You can console yourself with the thought that the HD recorder might be used for educational documentaries, the Kindle for lots of historical works, which will all leave too little time for the Xbox - on the other hand, pigs might fly

I like Kindles, you can digitize all your coin books and throw them onto it, handy for that "on the run " reference kind of thing.

thats interesting, ive just done a quick search on amazon and they offer a number of coin books for the kindle. the american market seems to be better catered for, but there are some world coin books too.

Ski, if you go to the links I placed on one of these forums ( don't ask me I forget which one it was ! ) it will take you to the american online library I think it is, they have a LOT of older books in many formats that wil fit on the kindle, my problem is..... No kindle as yet, but it wont be long I hope. The wife has one I got her but refuses to share, how mean.

I didn't get any coins for Christmas, but I have talked my wife into going to Florida the first week in January for vacation! I don't think she is aware of the fact that the "Fun" Convention (Florida United Numismatists) is that week! There will be 650 Dealers, and over 1000 Bourse tables...should be a blast!

Got an Edward I penny, Henry III Penny (long cross, both in Fine condition), Maria Theresa Thaler for Christmas. Used my Christmas money to get a 1996 25th Anniversary of Decimalization Silver Proof Set, picked up a Morgan dollar and a better condition Standing Liberty Quarter (still not even close to extra fine, I can't ever seem to find them in high grades..., at least the rim of the shield is 90% complete). Ended up paying $140 for all those together (along with a few handfuls of junk foreign coins). Also bought an awful condition 1758 Sixpence off of eBay for 3.80 Pounds with shipping. Less for the coin and more to try to become more familiar with currency conversion and international shipping so I can feel more comfortable buying better grade specimens from British dealers. Since my only camera is my cameraphone, I've only got seller's pics for the sixpence.

To be honest, the coin looks much better in hand than the pics make it out to be. And overall, not a bad purchase, everything went smoothly, shipping wasn't too long (auction ended at Sunday my time, and was here on Saturday). I'm now debating whether to keep it, or to put it on a necklace or something and sell/give it away as a jewelry piece.
