Island of Sumatra. Interesting piece, Scott.

Not a coin but a token. The country names, dates and denominations are all fictitious. Singapore traders had them made in Birmingham for the same reason that English traders did; a shortage of small copper coinage.. I know of 15-18 varieties. There may be more. Your example is, sadly, one of the most commonly faked. I'd need to see it in hand, but I don't fancy its chances.

yes I know about that, fakes? given I got it for a few quid i'm not bothered either way, but given it seems to have been brought in with various other Indian stuff and 18/19th century copper.

A lovely toned peseta from home. Cayón 17614, 1900 Madrid SMV 18*00 very easy year.
For your reference it's roughly the same size as a shilling.

5 pesetas. Cayón 17647, 1898 Madrid SGV 18*98
Bad knock at 12 o'clock which helped me getting it at a very, very satisfying price.

They're lovely

Thanks Leo. I got them as I loved the design and the toning on them all. I know they are all common dates and mint marks but they have great eye appeal.

interesting question :) .. it is the genoese gateway ... there are many theories about it .. My preferite is that it is a symbolic rappresentation of the city of Genoa itself . The medieval name of the city was infact IANUA that in latin means door or gateway. Genoa at the time was probably the most important mediterranean commercial port and the majority of goods destined to the today North Italy , Swiss and South  Germany passed through it, so it was a sort of geteway to the central Europe.

This Construction can be found on the first and almost all the genoese  coins struck from the 1139 to the 1638 , including also many of the coins struck in his colonies. The gateway became a sign of quality and for that reason it was maintened for a quite long period, but was reproduced on many coins of others country in slightly different ways as for example on the Crusaders states coins.

Here some examples of genoese coins reproducing the gateway

That is very interesting. It is a very abstract symbol alright, specially on the last example.

Fascinating history that of Genoa and Venice!
