AJWcoins Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Just been looking on eBay and come accross this item:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1910-UNC-LUSTRE-GOLDPLATED-EDWARD-VII-PENNY-CGS-UK-/270772443969?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item3f0b4b9b41So whats up here surely CGS wouldn't contemplate grading and slabbing a coin which has been electroplated (and probably cleaned before that!)? I'm going to email the seller see if I can get the UIN out of him. Quote

AJWcoins Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 I've been back on and there's quite a few gold plated coins that are slabbed for example here's a 1820 Crownhttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1820-EF-GOLDPLATED-GEORGE-IV-HALFCROWN-CGS-UK-SLABBED-/270772458846?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item3f0b4bd55eHopefully I have a response from the seller soon. Rob Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 It has probably just been encapsulated without grading, which I know is a service they offer. It has to be better to get some DIY slabs if the reason is to protect the coin. Quote

Totally agree with you there Rob, a coin capsule or a envelope would suffice I'm sure it would be a least a tenner for them to slab it without grading(pointless!). Quote

Colin G. Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 It is only £4.99 per coin to get them encased, I think he has been a bit crafty chopping off the top of the label in the picture, enticing people to think it is a certified item. No doubt some fool will soon part with their money Quote
Peter Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Why would anyone gold plate an unc lustre 1910 1d?It must of been badly stained...and why would anyone want a gold plated coin? Quote

Rob Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Why would anyone gold plate an unc lustre 1910 1d?...... or slab any 1910 1d that was identifiable as ok without needing an alternative opinion. Going off on a slight tangent, in the States I have noticed that big names or seriously large bulk submissions (such as whole collections for auction) appear to have more favourable treatment when the grading is done. Given that every business on the planet treats it biggest customers more favourably than a casual user of the service, I would be gobsmacked if this didn't also apply to CGS. Quote
AJWcoins Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 Well I got a response here it is:There is just the CGS logo on the slabbed coin- moskymanI asked for the UIN or a picture of the CGS label Quote
Rob Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 (edited) ...and why would anyone want a gold plated coin? To get an example of a coin struck in Barton's metal of course, like this half crown. Edited June 28, 2011 by Rob Quote

Hussulo Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 I'm pretty sure those coins haven't been graded by CGS. Slabbed but not graded. NGC and PCGS will slab any coin but NGC will write XF details, AU details etc. PCGS will just say GENUINE and give a code ie 98 which stands for cleaned on their coding scale.I doubt the seller will get back to you. Perhaps they aren't showing the slab label because it would give the game away. Quote

Slabbed without a grade, maybe. Quote
