As some of you may remember in some early posts I have had my fair share of issues with Royal Mail from posties removing the special delivery sticker and posting my item because they cannot be bothered to take it back to the delivery office to incorrect custom handling fees which are outside the remit of the HMRC regulations. In total I have made 209 claims and used Post watch/Ombudsman 14 times.

Well, today I decided to audit all of my postage from 01/06/10 to 30/12/10 to see how many of the Recorded Delivery and International Signed for items actually had a signature obtained. Out of 863 Rec Delivery a whopping 94 items still state on the track and trace service 'Your item is on its way through our delivery network'. This effectively means that 94 out of 863 did not obtain a signature which at the time was 74p per item in addition to 1st class postage. Out of 257 International Signed For 34 items state that they are still on their way. Again at the time that was £3.25 per item in addition to the postage.

I think I might struggle with the ISF postage as Royal Mail do state that even though we are paying for the signature, Royal Mail does not obtain a record of it and has no way of verifying if one has been obtained, but they do obtain the actual delivery date from the overseas postal operator which is given on track and trace.

If I am successful I should get a refund of £180.06, I will keep you posted so you can do the same if you feel it is worth it.

Frankly I think the tracking and trace fee is nothing more than a very profitable money grab on the part of the posties. I got registereds months ago that are still in "out for delivery" status. They don't really make dosh on lettres etc, but sure do on all those extras.

I cant remember the last time I had to collect something from the sorting office because I wasnt in to sign for it at home! Must of had dozens of packages through the door with stickers in tact!

I've since started having stuff sent to my office, as the postie here (in windsor rather than slough!) is rather more reliable!

Not as bad a one courier company that 'delivered' to me though... gave my new phone to the window-cleaner who was doing next-doors windows - and couldnt be bothered to put a card in my door to say where is was!

I actually posted a thread about this self same topic a year or so back.

My service has been mixed. Some recorded and special delivery items are just shoved through the door, even with the delivery strips intact. Others are treated properly and taken back to the Post Office for me to collect.

I did have a word with one of the more reliable postmen a few months back, and he told me that if posties were happy with the security of the item ~ ie: posted through a locked and secure door ~ they will sometimes sign for it themselves and post the item through the door. Notwithstanding that, there is no way that the "signed for" strips should all be left intact. If they are all still there, then the unscrupulous buyer has an open goal in claiming they have not received the item.

Which i already have had on ebay, hence the fact i'm pissed at RM and the reason i know this is that i started an invistigation that one of my sold coins went AWOL, anyway the German PO said it was'nt received, but thankfully the guy who i sent it to left me a FB for the item, or else i would have been liable.

The PO is up the shitter without a paddle right now, i pay extra for signed for and they are'nt doing their freaking job!!!! Rant over

Over 1000 buys/sells and only 1 problem (a fantastic Liz 1 penny in EF...bah)

0.01% failure isn't bad.

Just one?? I wish I was that lucky. Mind you out of my 209 claims since 1998 when I started to keep records, 80% have been for damaged items or the item missing from the packet. About 20% was for not turning up. Before 2004 nearly all of my stuff was sent outside of the UK which explains the higher loss rate.

My worst rates are for items that I have sent to Italy, Malaysia and Russian Fed. Shockingly I have never had an item go missing to China which is usually a bad one.

Another point ~ when you do sign for them, either at the door or Post Office, I don't much like those hand held devices in which you sign on the screen. It's never a proper signature, and just comes out like an illegible squiggle. There isn't even enough room to fit a reasonably sized signature into.

Even the use of the hand held device is inconsistent, as some of the time, they still produce a paper pad to sign on, at the side of the sticker.

I did have issues a few years back with CDs going AWOL in the post (4 in one day all from scatterd locations!) but never, touch wood, coins. I have got to know the local postie who has been on the patch for some while and am not too fazed about recorded delivery letters being pushed through the letter box. To give him his due, he did ask me first if this was OK and since he seemed trustworthy I was quite happy with this arrangement. Having to go and fetch mail from the sorting office would be quite a nuisance as it is some miles away. So, as I say, touch wood all OK at present.

Just as a matter of interest, the 1881H I ordered from Colin Cooke, arrived yesterday while I was down town. £5.50 special delivery item, just chucked in the porch and the "signed for" delivery strips all intact !!!

A coin I sent to the US five and a half weeks ago just arrived! That's the third or fourth package to the US that has done that. It's becoming a bit of a headache. Maybe they think I might be smuggling Libyans in.

They're red hot on security in the States. Obviously much more so with incoming packages, than outgoing ones.

Well at least they can't accuse you of being Osama Bin Laden.

I'm really not sure he ever existed after this cock and bull "we chucked him in the sea before anyone else saw him, honest we did!" story.

They'll dream up another public enemy number one soon enough - they have to have one, after all.

They'll dream up another public enemy number one soon enough - they have to have one, after all.

There are pictures of his body and a video of his burial.

However he was not an active commander and he wasn't doing much - killing him just got AQ very pissed off.

Apparently the pictures of his dead body (head) are so gruesome that they can't show them in the media, plus it might inflame tensions. One radio interviewee said they should make them available to the media at a separate showing so the media can verify the matter, but wouldn't be allowed to publish.

Yeah, allegedly they shot him in the eye first before shooting him through the heart. But I think he's still alive ~ probably in a top secret military facility somewhere.

drifting right back on to the post office

not bought anything in a week or so, then a card for a special delivery item, asking for £5.99 for an item i have no idea (the only item i know of doesnt have the same number) because the sender didn't put enough postage on? £6? i can see nothing that warrents six quid postage nor should the senders not paying enough postage be my problem.
