Peckris are you out there? it's been quiet for a few days on the forum. I was just wondering if you would includ Bonhams in your list of Auction houses that are ok? they have a sale coming up soon.

I was also wondering if anyone knows if there are means to test whether a coin is fake or not? Weighing and measuring to start with, sure. But is it even possible to tell beyond this?

Weight, surface detail, multiple examples with identical marks, incorrect die axis, edge quality, counterfeit references (of which there are many but people can't be bothered to read), quality of strike, sharpness of detail.

Unfortunately, not buying from China is not the end of it. There is a lot of money to be made buying this stuff and then selling it on secondhand as it were. If a guy in London buys say, a Gothic crown from China (fake obviously) at a hefty discount to the value of the real thing, keeps it for a while, and then re-lists it from his home address, there is no evidence remaining that it ever came from China and the chances of the end purchaser being able to pick it as a duffer are quite low.

Very worrying.

This is what im trying to get across , its already happening and has been for a while.The other good point made by Gary D was that the Chinese are already faking PCGS slabs.

Email the seller and ask if he can provide 100 of them and at what price?

They will usually reply with:

"Hello good sir,

"Yes we can tell me which coins and dates, would you like replica stamped on them or not?"

If you come straight out with the question then they will know you know they are replica straight away so they have nothing to loose in replying with the above answer...

Does this mean ebay has done something right for a change. Those ever rotating junk coins have added over 10,000 auctions to the average 10 day turnover. All we need to do now is get rid of all the birthday coins and coin cufflinks.

An automated replica and modern non-RM section might be useful for eBay to introduce so that anything which falls into this category automatically has its tree sorted. Honest people will list there and say it is a replica if they know about it, but some people list for example the modern mint output of ancient kings gold pieces in the hammered section which is unhelpful even if it is described as modern. It won't get rid of the person trying to pass off fakes as the real thing, but that is another issue which ebay has no incentive to address and won't discuss if you approach them as a private individual - presumably on the grounds of inundation. Any reduction in the number of pieces listed in the wrong section will be of value to both ebay and buyer alike.

Hm. 100 multiplied by any number of amateur chancers, still = a whole lot of crap. I'm not hopeful this will do more than slightly dent the problem, especially when you consider those people can just create a sockpuppet and put in another free 100

Well that guy is quite a respected seller, so it seems he buys from a different name and sells on his own name, but that coin looks a little cleaner than when he bought it. How did i find this out, well, he bought 2 coins from me under his alias, his address and the alias address both were one and the same, just stumbled across it today

Judicious use of the advanced search works wonders. I maintain a blacklist of sellers excluded from search results (currently 61 names on it), and 31 text strings that stop an item appearing. Combining the two cuts the number of coins in the British section from 50-odd thousand down to 15,000 or so.

Any new sockpuppet appearing just goes on the list and is never seen again!

The same happened to me a couple of months ago. I think it's his wife that buys and he sells. I sold a 1903 half crown in about VF which had a bit of toning. It was sniped for the reserve of £350 which was a bit of a disapointment. By the lunch time of the day he received it had been dipping and was back on ebay as EF to GEF. I saw it at £800 and didn't have the heart to see what it ended at. There have been complaints about this guy on other forums so he's not as respected as one would be led to beleive.
