They describe it as Norman, though nearly half the coins are Harold II. With there being 2500 of them, I think I am glad a museum has bought them to keep together. That lot coming onto the open market would kill the value of Harold II and William I coins!

I might have be able to look at them in the British museum when they goes on display.

But I would still be a bit edgy if I have some of those coin types. They are not so rare now.

Amazing  that they are nearly all either Harold or William, of 1066 fame. I wouldn't be unduly worried by reduced rarities - for one thing, those two kings from 1066 make them VERY popular, and second, they will be on museum display indefinitely.

Saw the coins on Google headlines. An impressive hoard.

Shame a few of the more common ones cannot be owned by collectors

Agreed - but perhaps they want to keep the hoard together, at least for the time being?

"Indefinitely" is a long time. Although, they are very unlikely to ever be sold, strange things can happen when a regional museum needs money urgently?

I seem to recall an abundance of Aethelred II and Cnut coins in the early 2000s - probably from some hoards in the 1990s. I got sick of the sight of every coin from the period for sale being an Aethelred, so I swerved them. I did pick up a cracking Cnut penny though for about £145. It seems they've gone up in value somewhat since. So have no fear, should the Harold's go on the market, they will be absorbed readily.

It's always a consideration though if buying ancient to medieval era coinages, rarity is somewhat more fluid.

I have a random and eclectic hoard of silver coins that I assembled over 30 odd years, pre internet purchases, I haven't followed a plan just buy silver coins as I find and if I have the "Brass" to buy them....I wouldn't say I was a good judge and was more luck and what's knocking around at the particular day..... A detectorist invited me to a walk around a field that I cancelled on a cold wet day in favour of a Antique Fair in a warm hall. I picked up a Victorian Crown for a £5..... the detectorist found some coppers and nickels... subsequently the metal detector was sold and silver coins bought...... I'd like to have ago at finding some coins this way at least once in my life.... but whats going around is there to be found.....me thinks!?!??! all the very best and do show and tell...it sounds all very interesting.
