Sorry Rob, yes I knew that. Just didn't understand Pete's reply - 'twas a bit cryptic. The question I was asking was have LCA got the ID wrong on lot 3132? Looking at the ribbon I'd have said it was a 10 leaf, but they've got it listed as an 11.

dffthhgtyhjjjkk  .Sorry hope its now cryptic ....11 out.......10 down.

you will remember this Jon :D

Yes they have it wrong.........10pts

Does that beautiful but naughty Britannia coin have a Peck number ? And where can I get one ?

P995.

Just have to keep your eyes open. They do come up occasionally, but will cost because they are popular.

Pete I've never forgotten it since you emailed me the photos. :P

But I tend to start doubting myself when I'm questioning what I'm seeing in an auction house listing. :(

Why? You're human, they're human. Nobody has a monopoly on getting it right, nor on getting it wrong. That's why you have saleroom notices.

Which is why you need to look closely at the photo and make up your own mind. I am currently tracking a coin in another auction where they have missed a very important detail. Just hoping the other interested parties have not picked up on it.

Because they're professionals so I expect them to get it right and not make basic errors.

Most of the time they do. Saleroom notices are usually no more than a handful on a total of a thousand or more lots. Given the extensive use of copy and paste, it's surprising there aren't more mistakes made.

It gives me less confidence in bidding, especially given the number of lots without pictures. Presumably you can return items that have been incorrectly attributed, but what if you disagree with the grade?

Fingers crossed for you! Look forward to you posting a triumphant result. :D

Grade is an opinion, attribution is not, or at least shouldn't be.

You can argue the case if the grade is wildly out, but half a grade either way, not a chance.

Jon.... how can you disagree with the grade :o

Its an auction and thats why you bid or dont.

In fairness to LCA a lot are photographed or available to view at a show :)

If they are cheap just take your chance or look at something next time.

Just hypothetical Pete. There are a couple of lots that interest me but have no photos. I am therefore entirely reliant on the accuracy of LCA's description as I cannot make the trip to look at these. This makes me a little uncomfortable, especially as I've not successfully bought from them before. Do you find that they are usually reliable?

Like PCGS, NGC, etc?????

Yes. And CGS (UIN 26554 - another "11 leaf" that's actually a 10).

Jon, I have to say that LCA tend to be quite conservative in their grading, such that - if anything - they undergrade.
