    My only observation (apart from liking the countermark) is that it seems the coin was very well worn before the mark was applied.

    Since we are dissecting Mr Gahlin's collection, I have a question regarding token edges. The Bedale halfpenny I bought was listed as DH9. But is this not the engrailed edge, 9b?

    I've never seen anything like that, only the streaky ones. Here's a 1920 - both this and the 1913 above have lamination issues. It looks to me like a problem with the metal mix which is why I always thought this was the brass issue described.

    I agree, I don't think they should be doing it. But I don't blame them either.

    Can you show me what you mean? This is the same as any of the others I've seen.

    I'm not entirely convinced about the "brass shells in the mix" explanation - has this ever been officially verified? The reason I'm unconvinced is this penny that shows the typical "brass in the mix" effect but that predates WWI. I've also got one or two from 1918.

    Welcome to the forum Rob. I don't see a die number on your coin. That doesn't mean that there isn't anything there, just that I can't see it. You might have a hard time showing it due to the corrosion. If there is a number it won't be directly under the 6, but below and between the 8 and 6., like this one from Tony Clayton's site.

    Good grief. It seems strange when you can go in and buy a coat for 50p (probably). Surely it would do them more good to price sensibly - they must know that lot's worthless.

    Despite the proclamation I don't see it as a coin. I can't spend it in my local shop. To me, it's just a round shiny thing.
