Hi, so I have an enquiry about coin storage. I currently house my collection in lighthouse self adhesive coin holders, laid down flat in coin trays. However I have noticed that after a year or two some coins have toned quickly or unevenly, often just on one side like. I’ve heard these holders are good for longer term storage - at least for a few years anyway - so i wondered why this was and if there is anything I am doing wrong? And tips for alternative storage as I cannot risk the rest of my collection going the same way. Thanks.

(by not genuine I mean not bank of England issue). Could have been a contemporary forgery issue of the time.

In my opinion, the counter mark is not genuine but the host coin certainly is.

NGC obviously get it wrong, on occasion, however I feel as though your 1934 Wreath crown is genuine and that perhaps the picture is responsible for the issues. This, or it's a really good fake.

Hard to tell, but in my opinion this was done at the mint, as it is not clean hole and would be hard to achieve cracks like that.

Good dealer. I have bought many items from Buckscoins at York Racecourse coin fair, and all have been good prices and quality. There are many worse dealers you could use!

By the way, there also seems to be something on Britannia's arm and what looks like a tiny signature or scribble near QV's head.

Hi, I have recently bought a 1900 penny (see pictures) from a 30p box as I found the countermark interesting. After trying to search the numbers on the internet, however, nothing comes up. Does anyone have any idea of what "EC654 66" means, or why it would be printed on a coin?

Is your coin the EEC 50p?

The 50p coins before 1997 (including "New Pence" design) were larger than our current circulated coins. They are about twice as thick and are wider, too.

I've considered buying one, but as you said the price is very off putting.

Either that or a museum replica. I've seen many of them without even a stamp on them to say they're fake.

I just skipped to the middle, got bored, and went to the end. I personally don't rate a slabbed piece any higher than a loose coin; for me, eye appeal, toning and the general feel of a coin is much more important than minute difference in grade - particularly when some bias or incorrect grading could occur, as has been suggested previously...

I have to agree, as I remember reading in the CCGB book that the '51 crowns were made with the same die as the 1899 crowns. No doubt this will have been altered slightly for the £20 coin.

I don't know about albums but some packets are. I was stung when I bought 300 or so PVC flips from eBay, not described as PVC though. Vergedis grew and some green slime appeared - not that bad but a notable difference. I quickly evacuated the coins and binned the packets!

Good luck in completing it! They might not be as cheap as you think though, as not all can be found in circulation any more. Rather surprisingly to me some of the Island issues can be quite pricey - £15 each ish. And you've got the 2002 commonwealth games set to get; they're £10 - £20 each. I'm sure it would be a really interesting set to have though!

I'd argue it would be worth a bit more than £35, wouldn't it? Maybe £70? Then again, I don't really collect pennies. My best is a 1919KN in fine, or '02 in UNC!

To be honest, a cut 20p is really only going to be worth about £7 max on eBay...
