Yeah it's in placa reial, I can lean out of my balcony and see it It's on every Sunday which is great, but it's completely dominated by euros and Spanish coins. There are some UK pre decimals dotted about but they're difficult to find and nearly always fine of worse. I did spend a day looking through most of the pennies, perhaps there's a hidden variety somewhere, but as usual no haha.

Hi stuntman, the quick answers are yes, yes and yes! They'll give you a ticket stub when you go in so just keep hold of it to get back in. Lots of friendly dealers too and there's no stupid question so just show a few your wares or as I like to do, find someone with something you want then ask if they'll knock anything off if you trade something in, many are very obliging. Have fun! I've missed it and plan coming back to the UK next year especially for one of the bigger ones!

Dave, cracking breakdown, thanks. Where did you get this? Mr. Groom's book? Also, which of those would mine fall into? I can only think that it would be the very last "3. An open ‘9’ type, with a wide ‘4’ but with a short plume to Britannia’s helmet." But is the short plume at the front or back of the helmet? Here is a picture of the one I just bought.

Yes you're right Bob, I think it's something like - 11.5 teeth, 12 teeth, 11 teeth, but hard to tell with the wear. Michael doesn't list anything on his website about it, Freeman doesn't list it and I can't find anything on it, but I know that Steve has one example which is where the last picture is from. I don't know how he found out about it unless he discovered it himself!

David, you're exactly right. A 1913 penny with die pairings is seldom seen. I think because none are particularly rare, people don't shout about it? It is funny you should mention the F164A, if it is the 1*+ C die pairing (I don't have my Freeman to hand), I've been looking for one for the last 20 minutes! The 1909 and 1908 are extremely difficult I find, I've never seen one unattributed before and when they are they go for top money compared to say a Gouby X or an open 3 or something.

To add that the slanted 4 variety is also known as the 'unclosed 9' variety as well, where the loop of the 9 does not fully reach itself. The first and last pictures have the closed 9, but the 4 still looks different to me.

I've just bought a 1904 penny that doesn't quite look the same as the normal variety, or even the unlisted 'slanted 4' variety that has since been found. Here are some pictures, notice the gap between the tip of the 4 and the exergue line and also the position of the bottom serif on the 4. Any comments appreciated as usual. 1st = My penny 2nd = Normal variety 3rd = Slanted 4 variety

I'd tell them IF; -It was someone I knew Or -The coin value is less than £50ish If it was more and I didn't know the person, I would just buy it myself and resell it because why not? That's part of the game. Anything that costs more than that the seller should be aware of what they have or at least spend a few minutes to do some research, the reason we know what it is is because we did do that research. Good question though.

Yes this is the part that is confusing. My current theory is between a filled die and/or lots of wear.

Thanks Jac, the pics are definitely a hindrance. What made me buy it, is that on the normal 3, it sits higher than the rest of the numbers in the date whereas in an open 3 it seems to be in line. And because this one looks in-line, I went for it. 1 = Normal 3 2 = Open 3 3 = My purchase (had to tilt the line because the coin is slightly tilted, but the line is parallel to the exergue)

Here is my punt for the week. Open 3? Opinions please! Bad pictures, but that seems to be the only way to nab an example these days!

If it helps Ian, someone recently made a good point to me that these finger prints could just as well be as old as the coin, and if you think about who could have handled it, the life it lived and how it eventually got to you with someone's fingerprints from maybe the 19th Century... well, it made me re-evaluate how miffed they made me

Ian, save the image to your computer and then when you are typing there should be a 'More Reply Options' button on the bottom right. Click it, then you should get taken to a new page which has the option to add an attachment near the bottom. As long as the file is under 500kb then it should upload fine.

Does anyone have a copy of the V.R Court penny survey? Was it also only in the August 1972 issue of Coin Monthly, or can it be found elsewhere? Thanks
