  1. Okay that's better, still not brilliant but better. I did have some of the config wrong. Might try again later in natural light. Takes some maneuvering to get the lighting okay..... cheers Garrett.
  2. Just found this thread while searching for the photography section. I had read the excellent article Paulus had posted and walked into a camera shop only to find nothing with prices on apart from $20/week and stuff like that. Second camera shop and all the assistants were too busy (it was a Saturday morning). Ended up giving in and found this camera on eBay. Thought WTF $60-00 US, give it a go. Was going to write how crap it is and warn everyone but saw Davids photo's above, I can't get near that so must be doing something wrong. Will go back and try again. cheers Garrett.
  3. You could probably have a look at eBay and see what works and what doesn't. Welcome to the forum and hope your health improves! Cheers Garrett
  4. Welcome Matt !
  5. Yes that made the news here too. There's treasure to be found, you just have to believe !
  6. Australia did away with the 1 and 2 cent coins about 20 years ago. Don't miss them. New Zealand has gone one better and gotten rid of the 5 cent coin as well and reduced the size of the others.
  7. Goodness that is a nice coin ! Off to buy a lotto ticket now .... Good luck Nicholas, that would be the coin of a lifetime.
  8. I don't think so. You go to their website you will realise their main business is selling the latest sparkling, newly minted, flashing, multi-coloured, hyped up pieces of shit.
  9. Looks like it ! I am pretty new to this game but I would not have minded an email saying 'you are the highest bidder but the reserve was X, would you like to pay X for this lot ?'. Obviously I don't know for sure but I may well have been interested and almost sent an email to the effect. But........... there are lots more coins out there and no doubt I will find a way to spend all my money anyway ! cheers Garrett.
  10. oh my goodness that simple huh Thanks Rob !
  11. hey guys what does 'Bt' mean. I know it is synonymous with 'provenance' but what do the letters stand for ? Wasn't able to find anything by search engine. "before thus" ?? ha ha <-- guess.
  12. Not me ! I kept half an eye on the 1746 half-crown but didn't end up bidding (happy for now with the VF I bought in my youth), and wouldn't have won anyway. I did notice two of the bits of gold sent unsold, were they the lots you went for ? I encountered the same with Noble's last time, I was the highest bidder prior to the auction but there must have been higher reserves. cheers Garrett.
  13. Intriguing finds and welcome to the forum Tom ! I am a bit of a beginner and really don't know what your coins are. First one looks a bit celtic and the second looks a bit like a penny from round 900 or so. Plenty of experts around here to help you out though !
  14. Thanks Peck, that's all interesting information and much appreciated. Nice florin, looking good for it's 100th birthday. cheers Garrett.
  15. lol - the description has been changed. It read 'EF' eight hours ago !
  16. Thanks for the information guys ! Very interesting, you're right Vicky, my obverse is quite nice but the lions have suffered.... Nicholas, do you like George V British coins ? As a youngster I never bothered seeing as we had our own coinage from 1910, but since coming back to collecting I found I like post 1910 British coins, especially George V. cheers Garrett.
  17. Was doing some research on my new 1918 florin. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GB-1921-Florin-Two-Shillings-EF-/161227241126 I think mine is much better than EF !!!!! :P
  18. Hi everyone I picked up a nice George V Florin at the coin fair on the weekend and have a question. I was trying to grade it (using the nice new illuminated loupe I also picked up) and noticed that the lions on the reverse showed (what I thought was) disproportionate wear. However looking at a few examples at the Nobles website it appears to be common. The pic below is from an aUnc Nobles auction piece (my cheapo camera has not arrived from eBay yet to photograph mine). Mine is not quite this nice but the lions look a bit the same. Closest to the garter star at the top is more worn, and the lion closest to the date at the bottom is more worn. Has anyone else noticed this in this reverse ? cheers Garrett.
  19. Welcome DemonLee ! I am interested in a bit of everything pre-decimal (not so much gold but may get a gold coin or two down the track). When I was a young lad there were still Aussie pre-decimal coins about (we went decimal in '66, I was born in '69) and a few of the older family members had small collections which got me interested. Prior to 1910-20 Australia used English coins as far back to early milled so English pre-decimal collecting was just a natural progression.
  20. Oh my what a gorgeous photo of a gorgeous penny ! Mine, mine , gimme !!
  21. Whoever sent that away to be slabbed has got to be darn well pleased.....
  22. Nice coin Rich ! Be a little wary of the prices you see in a single book though. When I am researching a potential new purchase I compare books (both Spink and CCGB if modern milled), past results at auction sites (London coins, Noble), and other dealers where possible. cheers Garrett.
  23. I like the Argentinian coin. Nice.
  24. All I did with my iphone was open the attachment from hotmail and the rest happened automatically. Good luck getting it sorted !
  25. Very early for a copper ! When did France start with copper coins ?
