  1. okay then It is 5pm in Brisbane now, so 6pm in Sydney. My guess is we won't see an invoice until next week. Hopefully they will delight their customers by replying on the weekend. Anyway, best of luck mate !
  2. Did you hear back about the penny yet Accumulator ? It's 1.15pm Friday in Sydney now, so hopefully you will hear soon (if not already). The penny sure will do a great job in filling a gap in your cabinet !
  3. Okay must be explained by the pre-bidding getting to that level or something. Phew
  4. I was just tuning into the ancient Greek gold. Had the audio going today as I am not on broadband. One lot the auctioneer called for $1000-00 a couple of times then there a voice 'I got a bid for $1600.00'. What the hell ?? Obviously not his money. Commission based bidding ? Maybe I misheard ?
  5. Okay good luck !! It's early Thursday here, and the auctions goes into Friday so you might take a while to get the confirmation.
  6. The 1837 penny is listed as sold for $800.00 in the catalogue. If you bid $800.00 and were the high bidder I cannot see why you wouldn't have it bagged, Accumulator.
  7. I think you can check the 1837 penny as there is a prices realised list on the website. I agonised over putting in a low bid for the cleaned William IV penny but in the end didn't. I picked up a heap of stuff, would have been a heap more but some lots where I was the highest bidder appears to be unsold, presumably because the reserve was not met. Fair to say my coin budget is busted and agree having too many auctions close together is not good. I am glad it's over. I assembled a spreadsheet of lots I was interested in, researched catalogue and past auction prices, examined photo's closely and compared to photo's of authentic coins, examined photo's to see if the grading looked reasonable, worked out how much to bid etc etc etc. Enjoyable but a bit of work !! Anyway, congrats to anyone who picked up a nice coin. Looked like there were some bargains made interspersed among the high bids I could not understand ! cheers Garrett.
  8. It's a nice coin in a way. I had a half-penny a lot like that when I was a kid, and it was one of my most treasured possessions !
  9. Have to agree it is a great forum too, I am very, very happy to have found it ! oh, and yes good find mate, well done. Saw a ripped up council garden myself on the walk home from work this afternoon and lamented the fact I don't have a detector (..... yet). cheers Garrett
  10. Thanks for the advice, yes it would be best to be wary. I've just read through some more posts on this forum and elsewhere in regards to the 1763 shilling, interesting but scary. I think if I do ever get one I would also be inclined to get a third party to double check it. Did yours weigh the correct amount ? Did you measure the specific gravity (I have no experience here, just been watching YouTube videos) ?
  11. Just looking closely at the catalogue. I am interested in picking up a 1763 shilling at some time in the future, but worried about all the fakes that are out there. Noble has two in the auction coming up, lots 2385 and 2954. Lot 2954 has the scratches from the kings mouth, and the open topped letters on the obverse. This looks risky, I thought buying from an auction house like this would be totally safe !
  12. Yes it is a nice penny, and a great web coin cabinet !!
  13. They don't only slab the good stuff... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1794-Flowing-Hair-Large-Cent-Head-of-1794-PCGS-PO01-Perfect-Lowball-/301008664937
  14. thanks mate ! I'll watch that when I am back in Brissie (in Melbourne playing chess right now) and not on prepaid mobile broadband (cost a fortune to watch a video of that length). Cheers Garrett.
  15. Without checking online, and probably making a fool of myself, didn't Edward IV's line not get very far on the throne (with his brother Richard III blamed for killing his sons). Maybe it was Edward III in the program ? cheers Garrett.
  16. Hi everyone Noble auction 104 catalogue is up if anyone interested. http://www.noble.com.au/auctions/search/?sale=104 cheers Garrett
  17. there are even counterfeits of halfpenny tokens ? I had initially found it surprising when I read of real halfpennies being counterfeited. this hobby is fascinating !! Good luck with getting to the bottom of your token erl2.
  18. Yes looks like a '5' to me too.
  19. Got one thing right though. 1901 penny is a key date. Nothing comes close in terms of availability for the veiled head penny. Ha ha ha - I was scrolling down the posts (it's early morning catch up here) and was about to say exactly the same thing !!
  20. You are not wrong Jaggy ! I will probably manage to constrain myself this time but will be interesting to see what some of them go for.
  21. Hi Tom The 20 pounds was for 'Carriage' according to the invoice, it was via tracked mail that required a signature. I am not complaining, it was around what I was expecting, it just would have been nice to spread the cost around a few coins rather than one that only cost 55 pounds (+ commission). The estimate was 40-60 pounds. I put a lot of bids in at around estimates but this was my only successful one. I don't have a camera to give a photo (something I plan to fix soonish) but it is just a nice little run of the mill SSC aVF sixpence to go with my VF SSC shilling. It was interesting to read up on the history of the South Seas company after I received the coin. Yes, there is a Noble auction in late November. It will be the first one since my rekindled interest in collecting and am quite looking forward to seeing what is on offer. Have a look, maybe you will get a bargain or two ! Cheers Garrett.
  22. Interesting discussion here, thanks guys ! I rekindled my interest in collecting around early Sept and saw the DNW auctions advertised soon after. Put absetnee bids in on about 20 items and won only one. I remember waking in the middle of the night and logging on to see how bidding was going, and being quite surpised at how high prices were compared to the estimates. Anyway, got killed with the 20 pounds (approx 30 AUD) cost to ship out a single coin (a nice little George I sixpence). Lesson learnt !
  23. Some very beautiful coins in this thread. Thanks for sharing !
  24. I have just got back into collecting after a 20 year break. I only have around 130 coins and have started using Excel. The first tab has a row for each coin (identifier, year, condition, monarch, notes, vendor, purchase price etc) and the second tab has identifier and photo's (only about 20 photo's so far as I don't have a camera, the photo's are from coin vendors). Works so-far but will probably get cumbersome and the file will probably get very large with more photo's. Might try Access down the track. Thanks for the discussion, interesting. cheers Garrett.
