  1. That would apply to anybody who has bought a single coin lot at a Spink auction, most being illustrated these days. So in answer to your question, probably half the regular posters. I should have qualified it I guess! How about in the annual Coins of England Spink catalogue, like the Scarborough under discussion here?
  2. Would the extra price be anything to do with provenance, it's the coin featured in the Spink catalogue! I love it, and I guess if you wanted one, this would have to be the one! The Scarborough coinage must surely be an easy and worthwhile coin for the Chinese to get their hands on. Just wished I had 58k handy at the time for a safe bet such as this one! Must be much kudos having one of your own coins pictured in Spink, can any of our honourable members claim that?
  3. Dave do you know when the new fees apply from?
  4. Certainly looks that way Looks like sandpaper to me The only upside is that whoever did it got what they deserve. I.e. a massive devaluation of their asset. A Brillo pad I reckon!
  5. as if! I think I did say "except Proofs" and I believe the Gothic crowns fall under this category and although there are worn examples it was not meant to be a currency coin. Am I wrong? I am in the collecting situation where I believe there are plenty of non-proof Gothic crowns, which is both good and bad!!! They are beautiful though, although I am always happy with ogling my EF gothic florins!
  6. I agree with these grade, love the toning on the 1910 too! I think it is Poor Good Fair Fine Very Fine Extremely Fine Uncirculated with variations including near, about, plus, good (as a prefix), BU (brilliant uncirculated), and FDC (Fleur de Coin) But I might not have it quite right! Hope that helps!!
  7. I agree with Peck's assessment, the Maundy sets are your most valuable items, probably worth £70-£90 per set. The "silver melt" at today's prices for the florin is about £6.
  8. EF it is then So my initial grading was right on the button . Thank you all for your input. Up to now my main area has been copper and bronze but have decided to venture into crowns, very nice and chunky even in low grades. I just love the toning on some of these 200-300 year old coins and no problems with verdigris However thr prices are a bit restricting! I don't know what your budget is, but Charles II and William III are inexpensive relative to other early milled (you should be able to pick most up for under 100 in about Fine)? And Anne 1706 onwards and most George II (although a little more), if your not holding out for VF+! Some interesting varieties too, different busts and over-dates and rose below for Charles 2, different busts for William, captured silver from VIGO Bay for Anne, along with Edinburgh mint, plain, plumes, and roses AND plumes. Similar for George II, substituting LIMA for VIGO, and roses and R&P, (but no plumes only variety). Happy hunting!
  9. I don't believe the age or rarity of early milled should influence the grading, I would also have to say Fair at best
  10. I would be happy to suggest it! How do we explain (for example) that, if they are all naturally toned, none of us have one like that in our collections? Or do we? I have a few beautifully toned coins but not like that!!
  11. Like this shilling Nice toning Thanks Gary, that's mine, yey!! I don't buy to sell (unless there is a snip on fleabay) but I do like to know that I wouldn't lose on the coins I have if I had to sell them, and I think that is definitely the case with this one, in fact I think if I got it graded and slabbed it could easily go for 300 + at auction or in the US ... Of course I know that is very small potatoes for some of the high rollers on here!
  12. Thanks Richard, I have emailed him, his site did seem to be down. And if anyone knows of a good fine one of these for sale for anywhere near Spinks guide price please PM me!
  13. Watched the concert on and off too, and feeling the urge to say something I have felt for a long time ... great lyrics and music, but Sir Elton and Sir Paul can't actually sing very well at all!!!! There, off to the tower with me!
  14. Just an observation, you thought the coin was in Fine (I think all are agreed it is MUCH better than that) and yet you paid a Near Very Fine price for it ... do you have any up-to-date price guides?
  15. Maybe not, but you have got yourself a bargain there. I will offer you £30? See recent posts on grading ... For Eddie 7 Florins, notwithstanding scratches, edge knocks etc, good hair and ear detail on the obverse and a clear date and face on Brittania on the reverse are some of the things to look for. As well as that, go for eye appeal, you have to like the coins in your collection, and enjoy the hobby
  16. Welcome Pies!! That's a very nice coin, much better than Fine I would say! If you paid Fine price you did incredibly well!! I would great as Good Very Fine, let's see if I get shouted down! Nothing wrong with the pics either, if you want them much bigger (in size and bytes) than the site limit, a lot of the members here (me included) upload them to a site like Photobucket and embed the links. I would value that coin at £40-£60, can I ask what you paid?
  17. 1st bust variety £525, £1750, £7500 Guinea head £1500, £4500, - Don't worry, I won't be challenging for that one. Thanks Rob, why not? Oh I expect you have a best known EF stashed away! Because there is better available, though EF silver elephant below is virtually unobtainable. I have PM'd you!
  18. 1st bust variety £525, £1750, £7500 Guinea head £1500, £4500, - Don't worry, I won't be challenging for that one. Thanks Rob, why not? Oh I expect you have a best known EF stashed away!
  19. Just after the latest Spinks price, could someone oblige? Thanks if so
  20. Thanks Debbie! Empire coins?.... DOH! even more to confuse me Can anyone please explain what "detector find" implies when in a coin description? Is it a good or bad thing? If to be believed, the coin was discovered using a metal detector ... not quite sure why sellers state that, possibly to explain the grubbiness or otherwise unattractive condition, lack of provenance, avoid comebacks, make the buyer think it's a bargain? Getting too cynical now!!
  21. Thanks! I like farthings too, and pennnies, and halfpennies, and sixpences etc. etc.! I think that I will just buy any coins that I really like the look of at the moment, then down the line a bit see how I feel about specializing in certain denominations. I might go for a nice grade coin of every denomination (that I can afford) and see them in the flesh, im sure there will be one that really catches my imagination Or you might try an example from every monarch. Then an example of every denomination from every monarch. Then every variety. And every year. Then upgrade the Fs to VF+. Help me someone, PLEASE help me!!
  22. I can second all of that, and you are quite right to be wary of postage prices, especially for low value coins. There is lots of great advice on here, including the perils of buying on eBay! I can recommend this link as a great ready-reckonner for milled common types: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/ It can be a very rewarding and addictive hobby, welcome along!
  23. Nope, made a bid a couple of weeks ago but have heard nothing, could you let me know if/when you do? Will do ~ and vice versa, hopefully. I have just received email confirmation of my bid ...
