But omitted to mention the most obvious fault - the inverted bust on the obverse. 'WHAT!' Where's my cheque book? I did actually have a mini attack when checking it out, as I caught 'bid' with my thumb when scrolling down the listing! It was one step from being mine! Could've sat in a cabinet with a Mary groat

1825 3rd Rev Shilling Variety?
Coinery replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I can't see the images up-close on the phone but, my instant thought was, if Michael could at best say 'it MIGHT be' a 5/5, then you'd need to find some other very convincing 5/5 dies for it to be anything other than a '5' in the market place! If Michael, with his seat well established in the micro-market, can't give you a letter of affirmation, then it's a difficult one, to say least! Would be great to research it and get it in Spink's, though! A satisfying YES! Good luck, Paulus! -
Absolutely no idea, Gary, but would be fascinated to hear about the concept behind the inverted bust! Doesn't seem a regal design to comission but, who knows? A lovely, mysterious looking, coin though!

I totally respect that area of collecting, and can see how it appeals. But for me I just love the historical context of Pre-Pre-decimal coinage. For me it's about 'getting in touch' with a generation whose footprints have quite literally shaped the land we now experience in their absence! All very arty-farty, I know, but exactly where I'm at when it comes to coins! The person that asked me about the £2 was so excited and enthusiastic, that I wanted to mIntain it by introducing them to the concept of this forum for the answering of questions such as this! I know I could have trawled the net, but how impressed was the enquirer to read a response from Paulus in such short time! Viva la coins, and diversity!

May get £3 on the Bay Cheers, Paulus, saved me from a potentially (on the spot...pub!) embarrassing moment! Why is it expected that we know EVERYTHING! -
Nice one, Seuk, sterling stuff, I especially love the presentation of the punches in rows, will be pinching that myself, thank-you very much! What is the proposal then, regarding counterfeiter? Is it that the fakes were prepared by the medal company, or that the dies were secretly prepared by a worker and then taken home? Or just that the punches were stolen? Are there any thefts recorded in police/court documents at the company? Amazing work, and the presentation is absolutely supreme, really inspiring!

Just been asked about rarity/value...anyone? Usual well circulated I believe!

Yes but it's getting too big to find them. As a seller I'd be pretty p*$$ed if much of my stuff slipped under the radar. We should all be worried! I have many times watched a coin in one eBay account, then tried to look it up in another, without success! I have even gone so far as to copy and paste the title from one account to another, only for it to be totally unrecognised. AND I have not managed to find it, no matter what searches, unless I return to my other account and view it in 'watched' items! Another example...young Mr Knipe relieved eBay of a coin recently that I would have bid a hefty sum on had I found it! I search 'Elizabeth 1,' Elizabeth I,' ALL about once a week, plus I check the entire hammered list by category daily, and Clive's acquisition never appeared once in any of my searches! Good for a buyer, but shocking for a seller! I can't make too huge a fuss, as I did just snaffle a '64 3d, which appears at the ratio of 1 in 10 for the 3d Pheon years. Around 200,000 issued originally, so very few in circulated terms, even back then. I could find only two examples on the major auction circuit; StJames and heritage a good few years ago now, and healthily priced, so this supports the rarity stats by BCW

I'd personally never buy one again that didn't have an inbuilt light! Been an invaluable addition to me over and over!

Well, and there was me thinking she was a struggling lady, that Chris very kindly allowed to remain amongst us all long enough that I could discuss wedding venues! And now I'm never gonna hear from her ever again because of you lot! -

Whilst I'd be looking for a better obverse, it cannot be denied that, compositionally speaking, this is a staggeringly beautiful design! The big obverse fields give the coin a very appealling 'something' that I can't quite put my finger on, reminds me of the Tudor equivilent to a Victorian gothic! Twelve months or so, it's going to be on my hit list for the pension fund...that gives me around 20 years to enjoy it first, of course! Another BCW book coming up, me thinks! Ooops! 120993184054 Link appreciated! -

Oh just you wait until Peter sees this one! -
The Victoria pennies are an expensive start to 'get your eye in' with, maybe consider buying a couple of penny/copper bibles, and have a dabble with the 20th century pennies first. Much better to realise that, what you thought was 'good' lustre and GEF, was actually GVF and polished, on some cheaper coins. The above does depend on where you source your stock, of course! We have dealers on the forum...Chris (site owner), Rob Pearce (R P Coins), John Stephenson (argentum & coins), Clive Knipe (historic coinage), Red Riley, etc, where I'm confident you'll get an honest deal if you wanted to add one or two nice vickies while you're growing in knowledge with the G5/G6 pieces. There are also a large number of other sellers here, who advertise their stock on the infamous eBay, who would also provide you with honest stock, and would happily take returns under just about any circumstances, I would be so bold as to add. So, copper/bronze, the most challenging of the metals to collect quality examples of, I'd personally say...good luck and enjoy.

Welcome aboard, Greg, any ideas where you're going with this roller-coaster ride? You'll no doubt have noticed there's a fair bit of reading on here, so take a couple hours out and enjoy!

with eBay search in such a pickle it's an excellent time to be shopping! Bargains a-plenty. Not such a good time to be trying to flog stuff though... That makes so much sense! I've noticed a 50% tail-off for 2 weeks now, it's broke a consistent set of selling stats that have held up for nearly 2 years!
