I think the big problem is, unless any said variety is acknowledged to be so by the academic towers, it just doesn't exist, other than speculativley (unless you can privately prove otherwise). In general, there are few who splash out on a variety/rarity unless it's been sanctioned by 'the board', though we all enjoy pushing the boundaries! If you want a new varity out of this, Phil, you just need to find a high-grade example from the same die, and/or look for any features that can link it to the original 3 die. All good fun!

Amazing how that 'back loop' and the protrusions I saw on the phone have disappeared! It could be a three, though I'd not personally buy it as such, or truly think it to be, not without a die-match or much better evidence!Edit: Idon't think it's an overdate, sorry!

Welcome aboard, Phil! A really difficult one...it does look as though there are some interesting features. However, I would say that, what looks like an upper back-curve of a three, is just a little too inconsistent with the shape for a full-shaped 3? Also, the little prominences at the front top-edge, and front-edge, of the 5, look a little damaged/clogged die, cruddy, a little like the edges of the 4? I don't know, would need a little more experience of type, which is not in short supply on here! A die-study would help!

Not for class pieces, I'd say not! But [by human nature] what bid is determined by the estimate! As an example, you bid five times the estimate to secure the coin, if the estimate had been five times what it was, you would still have had a go, and could possible have had some competition alongside you?Edit: strike 'by human nature'

And thats how non rarities sell for above their price because everyone who has an eye on a particular coin will have observied the esrimate and thought well maybe someone will go higher than top estimate, so i'll go a smidge higher, meanwhile the other 5 or 6 wannabes will be thinking the same thing and do the same and in the end we have an overpriced coin. Another thing most auction houses do, is place the estimate range lower than the value to stimulate bidding, and also only let the seller place a reserve at 60% of the low estimate (I know Baldwins does it this way)! When you're buying to sell, the low estimates always stand out but, as you say, I think they are generally set to attract bidders! The truly class material, however, generally adopts a different principle entirely, and I'm guessing that you all know what I mean by that! Top dollar estimate to attract an 80% paper bid, and they'll go from there, thank-you very much!

It's true the £107 bid was made 4 minutes after bidding opened, but you need other bidders to push the current winning bid up and it took nearly 2 days to pass the £100 mark. Of course, but this is my def of protection/shilling! List a coin, protect it immediately with a bid you won't accept less than (the newly listed brigade are surely smart enough not to place their top bid within 4 mins of listing, with 7/10 days to run, hoping they'll get a bargain?), and then go to bed for the week, forgetting all about it!That's how I see it! ???
