Hi albundy, and welcome aboard! I can highly recommend a couple of days browsing the posts on this forum, it'll give you a taste of what's out there, before spending any money on books! Namely, the width and breadth of the hobby, and the depths to which it can travel! When it comes to buying modern Royal Mint coins, I'd say it's about whether you like them or not, most people here are especially interested in the pre-decimal material, though a few do add the RM pieces as curios to their cabinets, the Olympic 50p's were impossibly popular! Edit; and having just read Peter's post, I do agree re books, as everyone on here does, however, in view of the number of books out there, it's worth targeting your interest first! The 2 suggestions above are definitely excellent choices!

Quality-strike and lustre (and sometimes tone), is a lot of what it's all about, Sound, for the silver, CU, AU, and Coppe/Bronze collectors ! It's the holy grail for as far back as it's possible to get a lustred coin, whereafter tone becomes the measure.

Yes, and be quite dazzling for it too, a rich shimmering tone! The one very important thing to remember is lustre-shine and reflectivity are not the same thing as a shiny coin, which will likely be cleaned or polished! Lustre has a luminance about it, definitely 'shimmering,' whereas a polished coin most certainly does not! Welcome aboard sound!

Welcome mattyguk, I can heartily recommend 'The Galata Guide to the Pennies of Edward I and II' by Paul & Bente Withers! A very good starting place for these pennies!

Outrageous! Of course we know why they're doing it! To catch those who sell an item for 99p and then charge £10 postage!They had a go at 'solving' that problem with books, where your postage charge was pre-determined by eBay (which was always £'s under the actual postage cost), forcing you to add the extra to the price of the book...effectively the end for a lot of booksellers who were previously happy with £3 for their books, provided the postage was covered by the buyer! They have got so greedy, they can't surely maintain it for long? It might be better, if they did want to be extra greedy, to perhaps charge 10% on postage that's over and above the price of 'real' postal charges so, a recorded large-letter in the UK attracts a 10% fee on anything above £2 + a reasonable packaging cost? Bastards!

The man who bought that possesses much indeed! I'd be surprised if the 'specifics' of this coin become common knowledge? More likely an investment tool for a grading company is my guess! Or, of course, it belongs now to a very high class collector of the genuine articles?

It's true the £107 bid was made 4 minutes after bidding opened, but you need other bidders to push the current winning bid up and it took nearly 2 days to pass the £100 mark. Of course, but this is my def of protection/shilling! List a coin, protect it immediately with a bid you won't accept less than (the newly listed brigade are surely smart enough not to place their top bid within 4 mins of listing, with 7/10 days to run, hoping they'll get a bargain?), and then go to bed for the week, forgetting all about it!That's how I see it! ??? Whenever I've sold off silver B on eBay, I've always bumped into the least decent % of eBayers. I'd say I've had to relist around a third of the bullion I've sold! I did get a nice surprise with the last listings, however, when someone from Estonia won all 4 100g lots at a good price, and duly thanked me with good FB a week later!

Blinking heck, that is good! I can understand, if you are a serious collector of early milled, why you'd want an example of these faked coins. Let's face it, if you're well enough placed to be buying originals of these types of coins, it's not going to break your bank to run a secondary collection of counterfeits and fakes alongside.

Totally agree, if that coin has full mint lustre I'd be extremely surprised. It could be the photography, but it's not something that generally lets Lucido down!
