  1. They can simply reject it on the ground that it has been previously cleaned! I am not certain it makes much difference if it get slabbed by cgs or not as LC states that they will give a full refund if any of their auction items turns out to be a fake. If one wants to make a point, then send it to PCGS aftwards to see if it get certified as "genuine". And you know that's just hilarious! How do you prove it a fake to L, and get a hearing, other than by offering them bad publicity in a very important market such as here? If it won't make the slab on account of cleaning, they are happy bunnies in every respect...they get another £20+ off of you, just for telling you to p**s of* and take your cleaned coin elsewhere! With only 1 in 5 coins slabbed by them, they would've leapt on this like heather on a Mc'cartney, for profit...for certain!
  2. In light of its many questionable areas! So, yes, LC, what gives this coin its unquestionable, many qualified observations, its genuineness?
  3. With there's a confirmed 1 and rejected 5, CGS have set a worrying precedent but, fortunately, they must, as a result, know what they're doing, suggesting they are 100% confident in this sovereign, which is why we can buy it and get it slabbed by CGS? They'll never stick it in a slab, of course, because they know 100% that they are trying it on, and loath the attentions of 'bodies' such as these! I feel certain that LC would not miss out on the hyper-value that's attached to a slabbed coin of this rarity, unless they were sapless to take it on...it's pennies to them, for christ's sake! I truly hope any winning bidder reads this thread, and then submits it, and then has the balls to string them out to dry! Any serious buyer of a 1917 London Mint Sovereign will find this thread, and good on them!
  4. You have been my biggest influence Rob! I recommend you and your views to all newbies It can get out of hand though At the moment, I have the following numbers of boxes to tick. People in whose name or under whose authority a coin was struck - 251 Denominations, either circulating or in pattern form, used or struck in this country - 130 Attributed designers - 173 Mint locations - 152 Privy or mint marks including overmarks - 327 Errors - 21 Metals/Alloys used - 50 Metal provenances - 11 Minting processes - 8 Misc features - 45 Type examples or too nice to sell - As many as I want The list could never be completed, is regularly extended and the diversity means there is always something to go for. Combine that with an attempt not to replicate designs and it is quite difficult - and fun. Totally off your rocker! I will get to shake your hand one day!
  5. That sounds like fun, Goom, wish I could join you! To get the very best out the experience, my advice would be to use it as a numismatic education too. Namely, rather than rushing out and buying lots of coins in an excited frenzy, leaving you with a backlog of coins you can barely get a chance to catalogue properly; I'd instead pick my coin (example: say George III Halfcrown) and put the 'proper' legwork into it and learn about the mint, check out the past sales for references, see what counterfeits are around, track down some interesting articles from the BNJ, get some academic understanding about it first etc. etc. It would be so exciting to approach the whole project historically, at least that would be my approach! Denomination? I'd probably not tie myself to that but, instead, would go for what I found attractive. You can at least then navigate around some of the more popular denominations in expensive reigns! Enjoy! Lucky you!
  6. don't ya just love 'em!Edit: kids that is!
  7. So, is that the end of private feedback? Edit: Sorry, I meant private listings?
  8. Yep. I'm not happy about it at all. This will merely serve to encourage more shill bidding. Which secretly serves eBay just fine!
  9. I've also noticed that, what were formerly private listing feedbacks, are now viewable!
  10. That J1 bust looks posthumous to me, a new variety!!!!
  11. Just as a point of interest, one of the coins I wanted to send to Heritage was an "NGC" MS65 Charles II Farthing (double struck), the reason I opted for them! Hey ho!
  12. Didn't the Nazis flood the UK with counterfeits to destabilise the economy????
  13. Another note: The profile of the bust is different! There is a 90 degree, or greater, angle beneath the nostrils where it meets the mustache in both the collection coins, giving the appearance of a slightly turned up nose...unlike the LC coin! I think the angle of the eyebrow to socket angle differs too! Edit: I retract the above...I've just been overlaying the busts using transparency, they are a pretty good match!
  14. The greater the resolution however the better chance there is of cropping the original image, re-posting it, and still being able to see what's actually there, when someone says 'can we have a closer look at the ribbon!'
  15. Very crude copy, I'd go modern souvenir piece at a guess?
  16. As Nick mentioned, I think the cape is a massive giveaway when viewed 3 in a row! Edit: the missing pleats are below the area where you'd first expect to see wear!
  17. Unfortunately, I couldn't do much with the contrast to investigate Rob's point but, whilst I was playing, I thought I might as well post the following, just to make comparison a little easier. All images are top to bottom...Bentley Collection Coin, Bruce Lorich's piece (http://www.brucelorich.com/archives.html), and London Coin's item. The Dates and Tails are all scaled and orientated to 90 & 180 degree lines, so as best as can be achieved given the pixelation! What are your thoughts now?
  18. Welcome B'field, not my area unfortunately! Instinct has me say it's unlikely an investment hotspot...and would have me thinking not much more than was paid initially, if that????
  19. All I can say Pies is it's a big old pain in the arse!I'm waiting on the arrival of some 18% grey sheet to start tinkering with my White Balance, as this is the key to professional pictures IMHO! It's certainly where my own photography is suffering!
  20. There's a sticky in beginners on posting pics!
  21. Surely a blocked die has got to be hot on the list...pictures would be great, of course!
