  1. Definitely keen. I've got some Talisker and some Arran single malt, too. Peter will bring the cigars, I'm sure. "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!"
  2. If people don't share their family data, does that stop the 'web' of information from growing? Does it work like that? 1560 AC, THAT WOULD be a very exciting date for me to hit! That's pretty damn good! I know you said you wouldn't share it, but do you typically find a horror story or two when you go back that far?
  3. Hope you didn't catch the other chaps travel plans before the deletion, I'm kinda fancying that one for myself? However, if you did, make sure you bring the mince pies with you, I'll bring the Talisker! Might even get Clive, Richard, and Rob to join us now the whiskey's out!
  4. Mint Victoria Penny! The description's great! 321271594330
  5. Geordie, Thanks for the lead, that is a great site! Are we thinking MyHeritage is better than My Ancestry? Trouble is, I don't know what I want from a site?
  6. Many thanks for the tips, it's something I'd like to get involved with when time allows!
  7. I can't seem to avoid denomination sets myself! I like the idea of collecting say all the 1901 coins (gold inc.) and then maybe look at something else...at least it can feel as though the collection is complete, in as much as I would not be looking for any further 1901 coins! Of course Liz, and anything Liz, I'm not fussy, though I very nearly got caught up in a date run with the 3d's once, when I realised I had a few of the harder ones! I am secretly itching to go for a big full-variety date set of Lizzie's, but money holds me back presently...but soon! Having said all that, I'll probably always be too skint to make a big run because I want some Liz gold and a nice Crown or two...oh, and a couple of Halfcrowns too!
  8. That's great value!Edit: provided it's not guilding above the lis? I reckon he'd achieve that and more, even on eBay at a .99p start! 231082908262
  9. Staggering C1 that!Is the Liz coin a former guilded coin I wonder? When looking at the bottom right quarter of the shield?
  10. How does the price compare to the £290 delivered coin that went on eBay the other week?http://www.predecimal.com/forum/topic/8375-common-e1-6d-but-top-grade/#entry94906 When you look at the roses, you can see the extent of the varieties, not to mention the reverse differences, yet both 1561! Dave'll be digging his new book out and studying all this very soon!
  11. I hope you'll be wearing that to work?
  12. Sorry, Gary, didn't mean to sound a spoilsport!I'm off to the mother-in-laws WITH everything I own, as that's not very much!
  13. I remember those shifts only too well! My wife's still in nursing, but took the NY shift instead! I guess having a 5-year old has its benefits! All dues goes to those who do the Xmas Day shifts of course and allow families like ours to have Christmas Day together! Thank-You!
  14. LOL Perhaps you've just always been surrounded by trustworthy people Declan? And what a quality that is to navigate this life, steering intelligently through the traffic of humanity, to happily discover you are a fair cushion away from the mainstream ugliness! And long may that continue!
  15. Poor you, TG! What a responsibility...and all we want to do is collect coins!
  16. Because of the break in the scratch across the neck, I'm thinking abraised coin, rather than plastic?
  17. Just thinkin' bout that security thread, chaps? edit: maybe a little tweaking by the hand of good old TG!
  18. Thanks Asumel, a good start!
  19. Where do you start? Edit: I mean, software, resources, starting points, etc.?
  20. What about some help, then, with starting off on a family tree? I'd love to know the short-cuts and processes involved in achieving this? New thread to start! I think this is so closely linked to the psychology that makes us interested in historical coinage, he says, stating the obvious!
  21. Something quite ill in me has materialised from this thread, I crazily set aside 3 coins from my pocket change at the pub, and thought (for the first time ever) THAT would be nice! I definitely need a horse tranquilizer to set me straight! I couldn't even justify it would be an investment for my son!
  22. None personally, Fiona, but I wish you all the very best in your search!
  23. BUT..................its pewterhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171194365394?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D171194365394%26_rdc%3D1 Okay forgive me for asking a beginner question but how can you tell it is pewter ?...from the color ? ...casting bubbles (I can't seem to zoom in on the photo's for some reason) ? ... looks markedly different when compared to photo's of a genuine coin ? ...some other way ? cheers for any information ! The pewter call is only based on speculation. To be honest it isn't pewter-like in the images, but is likely to be (or some combination of), given it's non-mint and, 'possibly' contemporary, origins - there'd be little point in producing a currency fake in silver! The devices/punches that make up this coin are clearly non-mint, suggesting an amateur attempt at forgery, whether contemporary or recent times (though it looks older to me in the images)! Making punches/letters fine enough to fit around the entire coin would require some skill, hence the amusement that the seller has suggested it's an especially rare coin, on account of the 'reduced' letters in the legend! All good fun!

BUT..................its pewterhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171194365394?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D171194365394%26_rdc%3D1 Home-made punches, so I'm guessing so! I think the explanation as to why the legend was shortened is the best bit of all! I have emailed! A Queen Mary groat of 1953-54? Now that WOULD be worth having! I wonder if it's the Mary Gillick portrait. I've got to sneak this one...shhhhhh!
