  1. Looks quite nice, but.........First item on ebay from this seller and from China. Assuming its a fake, what should we be looking for? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Britain-1812-Georgius-III-DEI-DRATIA-SILVER-COIN-/281221504719?pt=UK_Coins_OtherBritish_RL&hash=item417a1b9ecf
  2. A silly question maybe, but if you are based in Surrey, why are the coins in Cambridge?
  3. Historyincoins is a reputable dealer as I recall, so I'd be surprised if it's a dud. Andrew Howitt I believe. Or have I got the wrong dealer?
  4. What's the laugh?
  5. I've just finished writing my 10th song and that's enough for an album - sounds very grand doesn't it? The real problem is that I have written the lyrics, the title and the backing. I've got a CD designer, a mastering company and CD production firm, but try finding a singer. It's becoming impossible even when offering financial rewards for learning the songs and taking them into a local studio to record. Even professional singers won't quote me a price for the work!! I'm beginning to think that it can't be done, not locally anyway. When and if I can get just one of them recorded, I'll post it here and you can all fall about laughing at it.
  6. For me, I really like the leather box and I guess I would be prepared to pay £20 or £30 to buy one if I have a set in cardboard box. (Having said that, I do worry about the ribbons used to lift out the coins and the way they can tone the coins). I think sets sell for pretty much the same money regardless the type of box. In fact, I think one might even get more money by separating a set and selling the coins individually. I think my set is in the leather case, well they were before I put them into my cabinet. I'll have to go up into the loft and look it out, I have a bag with all the cases in somewhere. If mine were in the cardboard case I'd jump at an upgrade for £20-30. I think £50 would be closer. Fine - anywhere from £20 to £50 then. Considering the sets sell for well over £500 these days, I'm not really tempted to upgrade my card case! I want a case for the 1893 short set. Anybody got one spare?
  7. It's interseting that the colour on that coin exactly replicate the tempering colours for heating metal.Tempering_colors_in_steel.jpg Bloody hell The heated coin looks like it could clear $200,000 I shall have a chat with my plummer tomorrow. Final hammer: $411,250 I just think of the potential for a decent collection of gold 5 guinea pieces that this kind of money would bring - far more interesting and superior to this overheated tat.
  8. And the border teeth, albeit less obvious than the rim.
  9. Im going back to Henry VII for now. I will get different denominations. Not sure about Edward VIII. I should have list of the coins i will loook for ready this weekend so will share it for comments. Edw VIII is easily resolved if you decide to leave the UK and go for a Commonwealth coin, of which there are examples available. Or you could cheat and go for a GV 1936 coin which continued to be struck all through Edward's brief reign, which is why they are so common. What i meant is im not sure if i should include his coin in this collection. I mean he was a king but no UK coins struck and i dont really like commonwealth coins. Well maybe except for crowned bust of KG V... In that case, why not just stick to denominations for monarchs that were actually struck for circulation - means you can leave out Ed VIII and the Anne farthings etc.
  10. Yes, absolutely. (By the way - trivial point - I note that the Chinese Coins forum opens up a new tab when you click a link, unlike this one which takes you away from here, so you have to Go Back through however many levels it took you away, in order to return here. Chris, any chance we could have the same here : i.e., when you click an embedded link, it opens a new tab?) Why not just right click and choose 'open in new window'?
  11. Unless I'm missing something, he died in New York, on Long Island. That's right, Southampton, Long island, New York.
  12. I've got a nice little set of Edward VIII fantasy wreath crowns. They cost very little yet the design and facsimile of a George V wreath is excellent. Nothing wrong with a bit of fantasy - nudge nudge!!
  13. No problem with doing it at all, provided that the user were to use gold of the correct fineness of the coin they were striking. But that's rather pointless, unless they were taking a worn specimen and 'improving' the grade by re-striking.
  14. It's been removed so we'll never know now!
  15. Gosh! You have to admire how they've got the coin to match the holographic label on the slab! Been removed!I'm still seeing it!
  16. Also, the beard under the cheeks looks very rough and lumpy and not at all like a George V obverse.
  17. Is this one natural, or has somebody wrecked a perfectly respectable Scottish coin? I'm suspicious considering the price and the slab. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1390-1403-ROBERT-III-GROAT-S5164-PCGS-AU50-SCOTLAND-MAGNIFICIENT-TONED-ONLY-1/231049493565?_trksid=p2045573.m2102&_trkparms=aid%3D555012%26algo%3DPW.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D18190%26meid%3D2235429337737711701%26pid%3D100034%26prg%3D8337%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D8%26sd%3D131029081191%26
  18. Mine ( a single coin only ordered) arrived about a week ago - looks quite nice with the George and the Dragon design.
  19. Looks fake to me. Either that or somebody has done a good job of roughing the surfaces up and god only knows why you'd do that.
  20. Is she well toned?? From what he tells us, the Misses Peter might be worth a look too, all togged up in their Friday night best. So that's artifically toned then?
  21. Is she well toned??
  22. Couldn't agree more Peck, definitely not my cup of tea! One of my many criteria for what I keep or sell is 'do I enjoy owning/looking/holding it, does it have eye appeal and a sense of history for me?' That one to me is utterly ridiculous, it's not even as if you could use the weight to authenticate it with any certainty!! I entirely agree, but...... if you are a completist with a relatively modest budget, how are you going to fill the 1839 gap? To buy a decent quality one is going to run into many thousands and that's out of many people's reach, so a grotty one like this may be the only way to fill up the nagging hole. Of course, this is a good argument against being a completist at all, but some of us can't help that. For me it goes back to the days of collecting Brooke Bond tea cards and sticking them in an album. Albums had to be completed at all costs and so the completist is born!
  23. It looks very like one that went in the June DNW sale. I don't remember the exact price but it was well over my punt at it. If it is the same one, from memory, there won't be much if any profit as I seem to recall the DNW one went above £500 plus. Add on the buyers premium and then take ebay fees into account and it will be close to break even.
