Although on Collectors Coins GB 2009 no price is given it is just listed as scarcer. The dates I've struggled the most to find in high grades are: 1835, 1866, 1868, 1876, 1878 and 1884. When I saw that one I new I couldn't pass it up. It has to be one of the nicest if not the nicest example of an 1878 1/3 farthing in existence. I've also noticed what could be a new variety. Opinions? If you compare the two types on Colin's website and this: I would say this one (my old example for 1878) has a large 7, the bottom of the 7 extends below the 8's. Perhaps we could call it the large 7 variety? Come to think of it the bottom of the seven on my new coin appears to be rounded where as the others have a flat bottom. Another new variety, the rounded 7 perhaps?

I have seen some sellers describe them as New York pennies, but I guess there is no proof to substantiate this claim? Sellers wishful thinking or trying to boost the saleability of their items perhaps?

I think they were produced by the Dutch East India Company, that one being a Duit's (penny). They are thought to have circulated in the US.

I agree. It sounds as if postie is signing on your name which I don't think is legal. If your not in the item should be taken back to your nearest post office until you can go in and sign for it.

I think it looks like post mint damage to me. It looks a little too deep to be a planchet flaw. A planchet flaw is caused by imperfections in the metal, due to a poor mix and combinations of metals a thin strip of the metal separates itself from the coin.

I've had tropical fish ever since I was a child. I don't know if they are considered "exotic" enough though? I did fancy keeping marine fish but I think it would be hard when it comes to holidays as I already have to ask family to come in and feed the cat and tropical fish. If I had to ask them to monitor salt levels etc they may feel slightly put out. Edited to add I'm 30.

It is a nice design. Re Coins4u.net. you can click on the banner on the bottom of this forum. I've also just sold the brockage florin pictured above. It's a lovely coin and was one of my favourite errors but I have been re-focusing and although I still really like errors I sold most of mine to raise funds for my world gold and fractional farthing coins.

As far as US AT coins and TGP's new stance. PCGS's prior policy was "if we're not 100% sure it's AT, then we'll slab it". As part of their solutions to the coin doctoring problem. PCGS and NGC recently stated that their policy is now "if we're not 100% sure it's NT, we won't slab it". So expect to see less wild toned coins in their plastic.

Natural toning: but I agree with Rob a lot of the US coins will be AT. You see some that have only been minted for a matter of a few years yet they have rainbow toning. I hear the grading services (PCGS, NGC) have tightened up their standards and are body bagging (not grading) many of the colourful coins sent into them.

I'm not a 100% sure but I think they do the lettering on these at a different time to striking the main design of the obverse and reverse. That is probably why they are 50/50 when it comes to which way up the lettering is. As for the missing letters I agree with Chris and the The Dark Numismatist in that I think it is probably struck through grease or perhaps without the correct force needed. The mint sometimes do strike some coins with different amounts of force to check the pressure prior to striking the main batch, perhaps its one of them?

Hard to see the dent you describe, I can barely make it out. The thing that doesn't look right to me and it may be the picture is the colour of the coin. From the picture it looks like it may have been cleaned, which will affect its value.

I've heard one theory that it is due to grease blocking the die detail. This will not compress when the die is used if an airtight seal is formed and so the design is either non-existent or only weakly struck up. I have a few pieces like this. That's what I also believe is wrong with this coin. I don't think it will command much of a premium as it wouldn't be classed as a major error like an off centre strike or a brockage.

I don't know it was either that or food poisoning. Me and Lorraine both had it. All I can say is I threw up pretty much relentlessly for 24 hours, from about Sunday night 18:30pm I couldn't even keep a glass of juice down. I still feel weak today although I went back to work. I only managed to eat a banana for lunch.
