Wow, thanks a bunch for that. I've never seen one before. Without a hi-res picture, it's hard to compare to mine, but at first glance it looks a lot like the 1853 that another post linked. So again most likely mine is not a proof based on the sharpness of the reverse Irish shield for the most part. Now I can say I've seen an 1850 proof! Know what it sold for?Checking on the Baldwins website and previous results it only stretches back until 2006 unfortunately, Rob might be the man to ask for the results of this sale.

i've found a proof first sold at baldwins, described as the following Great Britain, BRITISH COINS. Victoria (1837-1901) Victoria, Proof Halfcrown, 1850, young head left with two plain fillets in hair, plain truncation, date below, rev crowned quartered shield of arms within wreath, edge milled (Davies 575; ESC 685 R4; S 3888). Attractively toned, good extremely fine and extremely rare. ex Colin Adams, Spink Auction 161, 1 December 2005, lot 684 Estimate: £2500-3000

First off, you should have the money for said "dream coin" or else There is no point in buying it only to sell it on. I remember maybe around 2 or 3 years ago buying a VERY nice GVF 1905 Halfcrown, not my Dream coin, but i knew i had a bargain with what i bought, i was unemployed or probably at an agency job at the time, but i knew i would have to sell it as soon as i bought it. I made money on it of course, but i f i had bought it now There would be no way i would have sold it on.I made 1200 on said coin, i was happy, but of course sometimes we eventually can take different courses in our collecting habits but if i had the same chance now as i had back then to buy the same coin then i would'nt have sold it, but each to their own in how you deal with what you have, sometimes circumstances dictate. You should be happy with what you buy and not let it be a financial burden. Collect within your means.

I think my collecting Comes with learning here and seeing the Trends drifiting away from any plain old shite will do to anything high grade will be looked over. I pretty much moved away from milled towards the hammered and i don't know how or why this happened, not to say i won't buy a milled coin but there seems to be just so much crap out there that finding a great hammered coin is much more pleasing for me These days. I've bought some fantastic hammereds this year (IMO) and also bought milled and proof sets, but even now i'm thinking of getting rid of the proof sets as they don't seem to fit what i want anymore, obviously i've had too much Money to Play with this year, but it's the case, they're not giving me the enjoyment that hammered is giving me, although i do like my recent florin purchases and this might be a small side collection. So if anyone is wanting to purchase a couple of proof sets, you know where to find me 1911-1927-1937-1950x2 and 1953. I will also add that i appreciate the help from certain members here on their opinions of certain hammered coinage, its very helpful when deciding to buy or not, i'll still be learning in 20 years time

You get what you pay for on ebay, reading the descriptions clearly and you can tell what is what, although some sellers do try and conceal the fact that coins are counterfeit,whle others tend to try and conceal it in the descriptions. You just simply have to know your area of collecting. Can someone link seuks G3 counterfeit page for the OP to save and study please. Not all sellers are criminals though and you simply cannot ignore ebay for buying coins unfortunately. G3 Halfcrown, Northumberland shilling, Gothic crowns and recently 1864 die number 64 Florins have been highlighted here as being sold on ebay as fakes.

Seeing a coin in the hand and a pictured coin would obviously show differences as a pictured coin would show up ANY blemishes. Both coins are nice but we also grade differently in the UK than say NGC or PCGS would, i would say the HALFCROWN would be UNC or Near so with cabinet friction. None the less, nice coins and i'm sure any one of use here would like to own. Just for your interest, a UNC or NEAR SO example Sold at Londoncoins for £1200 in 2011

Its the hunt for a good coin that keeps me interested in the hobby. It's your right to send them back if you Feel they are not up to scratch, my Suggestion would be that if you're happy with what Neil has been selling you Then keep Looking amd asking from him, also a few other dealers on here sell good stuff, you just need to keep checking at what they have, we are a fussy bunch on here.

Surely the value is what you paid and not what CGS tells you it is. if Spink tells me my coins is XXX i'll just take that with a pinch of salt
