  1. The young lady answering the phone was quite rude as well - I attempted to leave phone bids and SHE WOULD NOT DO IT! And furthermore lied about how far along the auction was, stating it was finished when it was not. I was annoyed to say the least. I either did or did not win one coin, and still don't know as she would not help out on a followup call either, this despite me being quite pleasant and patient. BTW, I discovered the auction by looking at the upcoming auctions & was looking to see if there was anything (!NOT!) in their London auction next week.
  2. No expert in import/export laws but there were def. UK dealers there in New York. Also I have had NO problems sending coins back and forth across the Atlantic. My points in raising the topic were: - interesting news in what some top quality coins brought at what many might think is a major venue - what it may say about the state of bun head pennies and possibly later milled English coins - that it may demonstrate a possible opportunity for collectors to extend their vigilance to overseas auctions
  3. These coins were from the collection of one Gerald Jackson from the Southeast US. These coins, as I understand were from the Halcion days of Spink from the late '70s or early '80s through at least the '90s. I once saw the 1882 in an SNC, not for sale but an article on it and this was about 1982 or so....
  4. Spink NY just had a sale of pennies this morning and must say that I was surprised by some of the prices fetched for some very nice pieces, particularly in the bunhead series. The 1882 London penny went for 21k USD plus commission, the 1869 4.2, the 1871 1.6, the 1875H 1.6k USD. I thought these prices a bit low for what evidently were prime pieces, supposedly not photographed well.... Anybody with success?
  5. DNW had a "No Sale" of a similar coin just three days ago, think I'll stick to my estimate.
  6. Yes, lifeless appearance with a slight bit of yellow retoning to it.
  7. I agree, I don't like either with just too much "wiping" on the 1819 and the 1818 excessively dipped. Not one I would be interested in.
  8. I believe "Hot Potato" is the game....Reminds me a bit of those infernal (albeit more common) 1823 Two Pound gold pieces - they just keep coming and coming with crazy prices fetched for supposed condition rarities. Let's not go there with the Gothics, please!
  9. Ah yes, one time I got literally a handful at auction....Let's see, they must be here somewhere!
  10. I have gotten very nice pieces in penny denomination from the 1960s for 50-100 quid...I am a buyer if not too steep as well.
  11. Nice strike to be sure but quite a few contact marks and a rim hit on reverse of some note... BTW, closed at 425 USD..
  12. Yes, a basement slabber & well known as such for some while. Beware.
  13. OK, what do all think a fair price for this 1844 - 500-600 USD maybe?
  14. Although it looks to be worn from use, I don't think it has the appearance of being well struck - transfer dies perhaps? I agree with the thoughts about it being a gaming token or such as opposed to Royal Mint project.
  15. Small update: the 2002 Crown showed up in solo form (not with the set) on ebay last month and that it indeed did have the World Junior Track and Field Championships commemorated complete with an ugly rendition of a female runner. No idea how many were actually made, as with the sets. This 2002 set remains elusive....
  16. I did manage to get this set thanks to Webcents above. The difficulty in getting the following years suggests there may have been far fewer than the advertised minting maximum of 500 sets: - 1996 - 1997 - 1998 - 1999 The 2001 was quite tough as well, and I am unable to confirm the 2002 set, even though the separate crown does exist.
  17. That electrolysis is very dangerous in that the lustre can be lost and occasionally the surface to deteriorate slightly - easy does it... Hard to tell from the pictures what the surfaces actually look like, but appears overall improved to me as well.
  18. Not sure if they are selling "like hotcakes" at those prices though...LOL. Full retail at 1500 is quite fair, 1700 very nice for this coin IMO.
  19. Ah yes, I thought you were referring to George! And yes, almost always is due to strike and not wear as has been discussed.
  20. I agree, 1700 a very good price. At 1200, I'd be a buyer.
  21. Yes, a slippery slope...I began with Wreath crowns, worked my down to 2/6, then florin, 6d, 3d and finally penny....Then started the works with Victoria at 2/6 and threw in a few farthings also. Now, almost nothing to collect again but that took 20 years!
  22. I'm interested too. "Punched in face"? Sounds bad...
  23. Dipped, not polished IMO. Do you have a picture of the Colin Cooke bit?
  24. Ah yes, there is also the 1857 and 1862 with their variants. Forgot about them for a moment....Proof 1842 somewhat difficult as well. Azda, which two?
